... The television debate on Wednesday, however, made clear that this was a choice between a man and a woman...

rubbish. it was a choice between a conservative and a socialist.

it had nothing to do with ‘gender’.

No doubt she’ll employ the same tactic if she finds herself in a similar situation.

The women don’t like her because she’s a royal pain in the butt.

"... The television debate on Wednesday, however, made clear that this was a choice between a man and a woman..."

This is how the socialists will use gallic sexism to explain their crushing defeat. It's always bad luck or the unreason of the voters that explains the defeat of glorious socialism, never the issues.

The French citizens are sick of being French.

They are ready to get back to business - and this election is the first step.

I say - congratulations - now let’s get busy.

How right you are. Socialism's failure at the ballot box is always the fault of those stupid, pesky voters who don't know any better.

If you believe this, it’s time to get your medication adjusted.

Agreed.

They never acknowledge that their system is wrong.

It can’t be that you have the wrong sort of system, it must be that you have the wrong sort of people.

So much for what the pundits had been calling the “gender effect”.

The "gender effect" can cut both ways. When women perceive a threat to their safety (or that of their families), they will gravitate to a candidate who seems a protector. The streets of France are not safe when hoodlums are running amok. I'm sure that a lot of women voted for Sarko because they want law and order re-established.

“Attacks on women are always about their person, never about their policies or their actions,” said Edith Cresson, the country’s first woman prime minister.

Yeah, like male politicians are NEVER subjected to personal attacks? Why is GW Bush constantly called a chimp or a moron?

NO honestly - I just got off the phone with a friend in Finland and he told me the same thing.

The FRENCH are fed up:

- Too much crime
- Too much immigration
- Too little business
- Too much government

The French are going conservative with a big way.

I applaud it.

Is that the best she can do? “Vote for me because I am a woman?”

One of her allies was temporarily suspended from the team for identifying François Hollande, the Socialist party’s secretary-general and father of her children, as her “biggest defect”.

Sounds like they are just fooling themselves if they think that's her biggest defect.
