GIULIANI URGES CLINTON TO RELEASE ISRAELI SPY (1999, Jonathan Pollard)
Times Union | Sep 29, 1999 | Stewart M. Powell

Posted on 05/06/2007 11:57:38 AM PDT by calcowgirl

WASHINGTON -- New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani urged President Clinton Tuesday to free convicted Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard, a move that could boost Jewish support for the Republican's prospective Senate campaign -- and complicate a possible run in 2000 by First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

...

Regarding Pollard, Giuliani said the Israeli deserves presidential clemency because the life sentence for espionage given him in 1987 goes "way beyond" sentences given in the past to American citizens convicted of spying for a U.S. ally.

Pollard, a former civilian U.S. Navy intelligence analyst, has already served a longer prison term than enemy spies who are routinely traded by their governments, according to Giuliani, a former federal prosecutor and associate attorney general in the Justice Department.

"It seems to me that there was an appropriate basis on which the President could exercise his discretion and cut that particular sentence," Giuliani said, adding that Pollard has "served much more than anyone else convicted of the same thing."

Giuliani stressed that he was restating a position that he had taken on the Pollard case "a couple of years ago" rather than announcing a new position.

The Clinton administration continues to review clemency for Pollard following repeated requests by the Israeli government. ...

...

Giuliani deflected questions about whether he would endorse Texas Gov. George W. Bush as the Republican presidential nominee. The Associated Press quoted a top New York GOP official as saying the mayor could make such an announcement on Thursday.

Americans living in Israel are not foreigners.

Last I looked, U.S. residence was required to legally vote.
I also believe there is a ban on contributions from foreign nationals, according to FEC rules.

Like I said--I'm against foreign meddling, no matter the foreigner.

“Before sentencing, and in violation of the plea agreement, Pollard and his wife Anne gave defiant media interviews in which they defended their spying, and attempted to rally American Jews to their cause. In a 60 Minutes interview, Anne said, “I feel my husband and I did what we were expected to do, and what our moral obligation was as Jews, what our moral obligation was as human beings, and I have no regrets about that.”

Not a good idea right before sentencing! He might have got 10 years without the posturing.

Only if I absolutely can’t sleep Unfortunately that’s more the rule than the exception. When I start leaving complete words out of sentences, I usually try to pry myself away (lol)

U.S. voter interest surges in Israel

"October 1, 2004

JERUSALEM - For Republicans and Democrats vying for Jewish votes, it's become a well-worn clich‚: a handful of votes in Florida could swing this year's presidential election.

What's not so well known is that those Florida votes might not even be in Florida.

Six thousand ex-Floridians living in Israel and the territories are eligible to vote in U.S. elections in November - over 10 times the number that decided the 2000 election for George W. Bush."

No comment on post #153?

I think it is significant to the sentencing.

I agree. And it just reinforces my belief.
He was a traitor, and an unapologetic one at that.
No punishment is too great.

Right now, I'm pretty ticked off at someone questioning my loyalty to the U.S.A. and being too cowardly to respond.
