MONTREAL, May 6, 2007 (AFP) - Most French expatriate voters in Canada backed Socialist candidate Segolene Royal, who lost her bid for France's presidency to Nicolas Sarkozy on Sunday, government figures showed.

Fifty-four percent of French voters in Canada chose Royal, compared to 46 who voted for Sarkozy, according to electoral results.

On the mainland, the results were the reverse: rightwinger Sarkozy took 53 percent of the vote against Royal's 47 percent, according to official results that did not include votes from French expatriates.

In Montreal, the main center for French votes outside Europe where 32,000 registered to cast ballots, Royal won 55 percent to Sarkozy's 45 percent.

A poll in the daily Le Devoir said last week that most non-French citizens in Quebec would have chosen Royal had they been able to vote.

Still, parties erupted upon news of Sarkozy's win. Around 200 Sarkozy supporters gathered in one Montreal restaurant for a victory celebration, singing the Queen hit "We Are the Champions" followed by the Marseillaise.

"We will go back to France happy and confident. There is going to be a lot of change," said Nicolas Hochwelser, who was surrounded by fellow French students exchanging congratulations and brandishing campaign banners.

That’s because the French canucks didn’t have to live with thier towns being burnt to the ground by muzzies. Muzzies in the ghettos of France (hopefully) have a nice surprise coming.

LOL! That’s what happens when you spend all your freetime bashing American conservatives and involve yourself with American politics. LOL @ Nosy Eurocannuks!

Now they may be a bit more busy with their own political fights to continue bashing OUR leaders!

VIVE LA FRANCE!

But, very strong suport for Sarko among French expats in the US. I know a lot of French people here in Colorado Springs, they’re overwhelmingly for Sarkozy.

My mother is Quebecois ( US citizen since 1965 ) who has always maintained that the French in Canada are Socialists at best, Communists at worst.

Go to Montreal and they'll take your money and treat you like a dog. If you're English Canadian, they'll treat you like a roach.

Because they are cowards. Cowards vote for cowards, it does not matter who they vote for.

I got thrown out of a Montreal restaurant in 2001 (while attempting to look at the menu) because I spoke English. The staff made it quite clear they would not serve us because of our “crime”.

Been there, done that (and I'm the son of a Quebecois and fairly fluent. They must have picked up on my accent.)

The worst part is that my 80 year old Mom is ashamed of her heritage.

I tried to speak French while in Montreal about the same time as you got thrown out. Most laughed politely, and then spoke perfect English. The cabbie, tho, spoke something that was totally incomprehensible, as do the Quebecois truckers who drive through Michigan.

Since Quebecois Francais is almost as different from Parisian French as Haitian Creole, it must be a game of “gotcha” — no one outside of Quebec learns “French” like that, and therefore, none speak it. It tells them who is in their club, and who isn’t.

Sunday morning before last , I walked into a restaurant 60 miles north of Ottawa , in Quebec. The waitress greeted me with “Bonjour”. I said “Good Morning.” She replied, “Oh , I’m sorry, Good Morning.”

I’ve never had a problem in Quebec , save the road signs are all in French , which can get a bit confusing if one happens upon road construction .

It helps if you smile.
