...while there is plenty to admire about the LDS Church (strong family values, hard work ethic, missions, etc.) I just cannot get it out of my head that Joseph Smith not too much different than the Prophet Mohammad when it came to heavenly "visions," angelic visits, plural marriages, and fairy tales.
George Will is usually wrong.
I’m more interested in what criteria Romney qualified for to receive the Log Cabin Republican endorsement in 1994.
“Mitt Romney’s Evangelical Problem”
This is the one of the current “big three” that I would vote for in the general. Other two? Pound sand.
I am an evangelical.
But I totally believe that the single biggest reason the media pushes Romney is because the media perceives him as ultimately doomed as a presidential candidate. The media believes that the GOP base (evangelical Christians) will not turn out for a Mormon, and so the media desperately wants a Mormon to be our nominee.
I happen to like Romney well enough, and I would not have a problem voting for him. But I like Hunter and Thompson a lot better.
“’ManTan’ Romney”.......
quote by Michael Savage
Just for info, this is an article from Sept 2005.
My uncle the libertarian secular humanist says he’s unlikely to vote for Romney because he’s a devout Mormon.
Blue-blood establishment liberal.
Oops, I mean, he put aside a lifetime of liberalism to become conservative JUST in time to run in the GOP presidential primary.
What a phony!
If that is the standard, then we can't elect anybody except a good fundamentalist christian. Unless we are jewish, then we have to elect a good Jewish person. Or if we are muslim, then we have to vote for a muslim.
The argument is that if we elect anybody that doesn't meet our definition of Christianity, we are somehow endorsing opposition to Christianity. Our founders were clear that religious tests were not required in government, I would argue that they are not generally appropriate for choosing your candidate either.
Good morning.
I believe the book of Mormon is phony as the day is long but I do admire Mormons for what are clearly strong traditional family values. Utah isn’t the most conservative state in the Union for nothing. I spent a good deal of time researching Joseph Smith and the ever changing book of Mormon which is at best science fiction. I know a little about such fictions because a ancestor of mine wrote a similar tome, though he did it through automatic typing instead of translating with the use of a seer stone. The translating was suppose to be perfect letter for letter when the tablets were received from the angel Moroni.

Christians proclaim the Cross, Mormons hide the Cross
Classical christianity is based on the concept of irretrievably corrupt and sinful humans being redeemed by Jesus' "paying the price" on the cross in our place, and we, in repentane accepting his sacrifice as the central principal of our lives. Catholics and Evangelicals see the cross as symbolically central to their faith. In Mormonism, the central principal of the cross is pushed to the periphery, to the extent that the symbol and the meaning behind it are largely ignored. It's a religion about the Golden Rule and seeking righteousness, which is all well and good, but is not "Christianity" in the historic sense of the term, any more than Confucianism.
Christians proclaim the Cross, Mormons hide the Cross
End up with nothing.
If he’s the nominee, I’ll vote for him.
My preference is Hunter, who is in my opinion the genuine conservative running. Thompson is my #2 choice.
But my only “not not but heck no” is McCain. Romney isn’t McCain, and so he is not disqualified in the general in my opinion, if he comes out on top in the primary.
My problem with Romney is that he is a “kinder gentler” conservative, and I’m looking for bold. I love Bush, but I’ve had enough of the “kinder gentler” conservatism, and I’m ready for a scrapper. More specifically, I’m looking for a war-president, as the war is my bottom line.
My opinion is that the “mormon/evangelical” problem is an invention. I don’t know any evangelicals that are opposing him on that basis. The only concern is that, maybe, he’s not conservative enough. But religion is as far as I can tell not a factor. I am therefor suspicious of writers trying to make it into one.
There is a third alternative, which given the angry, ego-fueled rhetoric from both sides seems the most likely.
One big difference is Mormonism is spread by clean cut young people doing missionary work. Islam was spread at the end of the sword and is still a horrifically violent religion. When was the last time you heard of Mormon suicide bomber?
Gazoinks!! Someone discovered that not everyone gets to be right at the same time?! What in the heck!! Guess I should vote for the man from New York since he doesn’t seem to believe in anything.
