Syria has emphasized missile development in recent months. According to Western sources, Syria has the ability to independently manufacture Scud missiles, and it has 300 of them deployed just north of the demilitarized zone in the Syrian part of the Golan Heights. A division of some 10.000 troops is responsible for operating the missiles, which include an small number of Scud D's with a range of 700 kilometers and said to be capable of carrying nonconventional warheads. Syria has a massive military divided into 12 divisions and totaling close to 400.000 soldiers at full mobilization...

Sorry, but the fact that the article has to highlight a weapons system from the mid 1940’s as ‘big news’ is simply laughable.

Scuds are ineffective military weapons. They are effect ‘terror weapons’ on a civilian population, as both London in 1943 and 1944 and Israel during the first Gulf War remind us.

But Syria as a ‘serious military threat’ isn’t supported by the available data.

Their ships have glass bottoms, so you they can see their air force planes.

the scud is a terror weapon. i don't see its military applicability, and it certainly wont be decisive in a war with Israel.

also, yes, i think Syria has figured out how to slow or stop Israel from advancing in Lebanon. but that doesn't mean Syria has any chance of invading Israel, and should they do so, Damascus would suffer greatly, to say the least.

as good as Syria may have become, i don't think they are anywhere close to the destruction Israel could unleash if really threatened with being overrun.

I loath syria's military......
and to disembowel 'asshat' would be great....
A free fire zone in all of syria would be a good thing.
Let the game begin ......
there's nothing better than burning syria in the am......

So long as their military does not have an NCO corps, it will suck.

Israel would dominate Syria or any combination of Arab states in a classic set air and ground battle. The problem is that the Arab states have learned from Iraq that assymetrical warfare tactics is the great equalizer against superior forces with the added benefit of sapping the civilian will to continue a conflict.

I also believe that much of the Israeli civilian population is much like America, no stomach for a protacted
bloody conflict. The Zionist zeal fueled by memories of the Holocost is waning.

you forget the difference between fighting in Lebanon and fighting inside Israel.

if Syria crosses the border into Israel, every Israeli will be on the front line.

count on it.

along with about 5 million American Israel supporters.

The Arabs have not fielded a threatening military (other than to one another) since the middle ages.
