"...during the campaign that by turning hard right he would win over supporters of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the head of the extreme right National Front..."

Attracting voters is a crime now? Should National Front voters be banned from voting? Would the Socialist Segolene Royal be criticized if she had attracting NF voters?

Hmm, there's the rub, if the Socialist had gained NF voters, she'd be praised for bringing the extreme right into the democratic fold.

But it gets worst. Where did Le Pen get his voters from? Hmmm? A good proportion of Le Pen voters came out of the Communist Party after the collapse of Soviet Communism. Suddenly, the authoritarian/totalitarians didn't have a home. Now, if true, NF voters voted for Sarkozy this time, Sarkozy can claim a great success. He's brought anti-freedom voters into the pro-freedom fold. Perhaps this time, they've rejected statism forever.

“While Ms. Royal has pledged to protect and unite France, Mr. Sarkozy has often taken a ruthless us-against-them attitude, stressing there is no place in France for young people who do not respect the law or for immigrants who do not embrace French values.”

“There is no place in France for young people who do not respect the law..or embrace French Values”

Sarkozy is speaking the truth and the leftists (and worse then leftists, NYT columnists) cannot stand to hear it.

I agree 100% with Sarkozy statement, those are good principles to run a country by and we need a candidate who says the same thing then does something about implementing them.

"The GOP needs to be beaten about the head and shoulders with that statement!!!"

Amen to that! Republicans need to say no more living on the dole! "We ain't your daddy!" The war on terror is real and we will not back off. Bush did the right thing and took out that genocidal dictator Saddam!

Stand up you damn Republicans!

Side thought: I was wondering that if the US had gone to war with the USSR which side would the NY Times have taken? I wonder if they would be happier with a Stalin type government.

“there is no place in France for young people who do not respect the law or for immigrants who do not embrace French values.”
Only a left wingnut could think that that is a bad thing.

Yeaaaaa, the ban on French wine is over.

You probably won't find much in the way of support for a BUY FRENCH campaign here at FR but I for one intend to end my boycott of French goods. Just think of the message that would be sent to the French people if all of the sudden exports to the U.S. start to rise after they wisely elect a pro-U.S. conservative government. They would get that message.

If we were willing to boycott the French for their anti-U.S. positions then we should be just a willing to end the boycott when things turn our way.

I agree! The GOP have turned out to be a bunch of ball less, cowards unwilling to take on a fight with these Marxist liberals. Take a gamble GOP, you’ll be suprised at what kind of support you have out there!

Sarkozy could well turn out to be Chirac redux. When Chirac won his first election he was the conservative candidate that the American right supported and thought would pull France off the road to hell socialism.
