New York Times reporter Elaine Sciolino continued to nurse her long-standing grudge against Nicolas Sarkozy, the tough-on-crime presidential candidate of France, in two stories, one before and one after Sarkozy routed Socialist candidate Segolene Royal to win the presidency.
Sciolino wrote in her election preview on Saturday: "He has gambled -- apparently successfully -- during the campaign that by turning hard right he would win over supporters of Jean-Marie Le Pen, the head of the extreme right National Front who made it into the second round of the 2002 election but made it into only fourth place this time.
"While Ms. Royal has pledged to protect and unite France, Mr. Sarkozy has often taken a ruthless us-against-them attitude, stressing there is no place in France for young people who do not respect the law or for immigrants who do not embrace French values.
"In Montpellier on Thursday, where he made his last campaign speech, Mr. Sarkozy railed against those who do not like him. 'People accuse me of encouraging public anger,' he said. 'But whos angry? The thugs? The drug traffickers? I can assure you -- I do not seek to be the friend of thugs.'"
"In this election, authority apparently is deemed to be more important than compassion."

Yeaaaaa, the ban on French wine is over.
The usual drooling, ranting drivel from the left..... while I would not wish harm to anyone, I note that just about the only hope for such fools to see reality would be to caught up in the midst of one of the riots that her PC-nonsense would allow to continue unchecked...... maybe when she has HER car burned and she (or her family, friends, etc.) receive the compassionate treatment dished out by the rampaging street thugs, only then would she have a chance to be in touch with reality.
The GOP needs to be beaten about the head and shoulders with that statement!!!
85% of the people voted. How did they do that?
Awww — those poor youths. Obviously, they’re depraved on account they’re deprived.
Here’s what the youth of France should be singing:
‘We are sick, we are sick,
We are sick, sick, sick,
Like we’re sociologically sick!”
Wow! How ruthless of him. This woman is obviously too dumb to realize how dumb she is.
To the writer:
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Motivated voters AND French elections are held on week-ends???
7 years. What a term. The NYT will have to brace itself for 7 long years of suffering.
We could do it as well, with weekend voting, if the Demoncrats would allow it. The Dim base is made up primarily of the unemployed or publically employed — Tuesdays off to vote is no problem. If you’re a Republican, you’re probably employed somewhere in the private sector, where getting the day off is more problematic.
Don’t expect that kind of change anytime soon.
Ha,ha,there’s not much I love more then to see anyone affiliated with the NY TIMES angry and depressed because that means something good has happened somewhere in the world !!!
Lefties are really, really, really bad losers....
Sorry, but I’ve become permanently attached to Californian, Italian and Australian.
What Australian wine would you recommend?
If compassion (for rioting welfare thugs) is more important than authority, you have chaos. The French are tired of chaos.
Hard right .... give ... me .... a break.
And this is a problem? Why?
