The private Giuliani tests the public's tolerance (2 marriages/'messy' divorce)
The Los Angeles Times ^ | May 7, 2007 | Paul Lieberman

Rudolph W. Giuliani's first inauguration as mayor here was a family affair. His 7-year-old son, Andrew, mugged for the cameras as Papa Rudy toasted his television hostess wife, Donna, as "my partner, my inspiration and my lover." Then daughter Caroline, 4, hid behind her hat as the couple kissed that Jan. 2, 1994.

Thirteen years later, that familial unit is nowhere to be seen in the Giuliani presidential campaign. The once rambunctious Andrew, now a burly Duke sophomore, has indicated that he has no plans to stump for his father — he's too busy working on his golf game. Neither he nor Caroline, now poised to enter Harvard, are even mentioned on the campaign's website, JoinRudy2008.com.

And the woman shown now with Giuliani is not their mother, but wife No. 3, nurse-by-training Judith Nathan Giuliani, who recently volunteered to New York tabloids that this was her third marriage as well.

"I don't think any of us have perfect lives," Giuliani himself said soon after, when both faced TV's Barbara Walters.

"Judge me by my public performance," he added.

Supporters of Giuliani, the GOP front-runner in polls, are counting on voters to do just that during a campaign that may test whether the electorate really cares any longer, in the post-Clinton era, about a candidate's personal life.

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), a chief rival for the party nomination, has been through his own unflattering divorce. Former Sen. Fred Thompson (R-Tenn.), who is being urged to run, had a divorce, then a vigorous single life — and now has a much younger wife. And former House Speaker Newt Gingrich (R-Ga.), who may throw his hat in, was having an extramarital affair with a congressional aide — now his third wife — while he was lambasting President Clinton during the Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Yes, but most are less flawed than Rudy!

I am not a Giulliani fan, and I’d much rather have several other Republicans (declared and undeclared candidates) in the White House’. However, I think the liberal media is obsessed with attacking Rudy at this point because he has been billed as the most likely candidate to beat Hillary. They view him as a threat to their agenda. If McCain were to start polling exceptionally well, and was trashing Hillary and Obama in those match-ups, they would trash him as well.

It’s interesting and hypocrirtical, but hardly surprising that they don’t bring up all the baggage Hillary brings with her. They don’t mention the cold and calculating comments that Juanita Broderick stated Hillary made to her, the Rose law firm billing records, Hillary’s secretive approach and strong arm tactics during her health care debacle, her role in the White House travel office firings, her antisemitic comments, her socialist ideological ties, her commodities trading adventure, her complicity covering up Bill’s affairs, her questionable naivete about what Bill was doing with Monica (”he was ministering to youth”), etc. etc. etc. etc. To them, she is a clean as the driven snow.

No, Rudy isn’t perfect, but these hit pieces are motivated by a highly agenda-driven liberal media’s desire to vindicate the impeachment of their hero by putting the Clintons back in the White House.

Sorry for the long response. It’s 4:30 am and I’m waiting for the coffee to finish brewing.

What does everyone here think?

Guiliani would have made a great New York Senator. He might have even voted with us most of the time.

His campaign for Presidency is over before it started however.

Conservatives will not consolidate to support him "just to win".

Democrats will have their fascist choice in Hillary, so they don't need anything Guiliani has to offer. He's not even a fascist so what good is he to them?

Guiliani as the GOP nominee will lose the election. I can't vote for him.

What do I think? A man's private life is a window into his soul. And it is not at all unreasonable to hold to a higher standard those who would seek the reins of the highest office in the land.

I do not see in Giuliani the sorts of redeeming qualities that Reagan had that justified overlooking the latter's divorce and remarriage - which happened some thirty years prior to taking office in the White House. In Rudy's case, these various divorces and affairs seem to creep up to the present time rather than being foggy memories from the distant past.

No, this is not the man of character I want providing a role model for my son or daughters.

“one order from a Judge not to have his mistress in the house of his wife while they will still married........”

His wife didn’t have a house. You are referring to Gracie Mansion (the house of the NYC mayor)- which Donna Hanover, a classy and stylish lady with a lot of grace (sarc) refused to vacate and used to stage a massive public relations campaign as the aggrieved wife- after divorce proceedings began. Always two sides to every story!

His wife didn’t have a house.

It was indeed his wife's residence. I thought about using the word "home" by I can't imagine Rudy being capable of creating a home for his wife children given his blatant disregard for their well being.

The fact that his wife is an undignified and unclassy woman in no way absolves Rudy's of his responsibility as the head of a family to do the right thing by his children.

What happened in Rudy's pants was important than the wellbeing of his children.

How anyone can defend that is beyond me.

With “vigorous social life” the lame-stream media thinks it’s sending coded messages to the “bible-beaters, snake-handlers, holy-rollers, fundies and other religious crazies” of America. What it really shows is that most reporters have never been to church or abandoned religion after childhood. They understand very little about today’s Pentecostals, Baptists, COGIC, Seventh-Days, LDS, and other denominations, yet they think they can effect elections by turning us against our own. What a laugh!!

Hopefully they haven't even begun. He is a pitiful excuse for a GOP candidate.
