Blair To Reveal His Future On Thursday Updated: 16:14, Wednesday May 09, 2007

Downing Street has confirmed that Tony Blair will "make an announcement" on his future as Labour leader tomorrow.

Mr Blair in the CommonsHis official spokesman said Mr Blair would tell Cabinet colleagues of his intentions tomorrow morning but would make no public statement in Downing Street.

He will then fly to his Sedgefield constituency and is expected to publicly announce his resignation there.

The spokesman said: "There will be a Cabinet tomorrow morning at 9am. I don't think that will be quite as long as usual.

"The Prime Minister will then go elsewhere to make an announcement and that will be all that happens."

The news came after Mr Blair vowed to remain focused on the job of running the country until he steps down as Prime Minister.

He was speaking after David Cameron branded his administration "the Government of the living dead".

Speaking at Prime Minister's Questions, the Tory leader told MPs a number of ministers were facing the chop by Mr Blair's likely successor, Gordon Brown.

"This is the Government of the living dead. Why do we have to put up with it?" he asked.

Downing Street said earlier Mr Blair will be "fully engaged" across domestic and international affairs until he goes.

His official spokesman said he would be concentrating particularly on health and education and the forthcoming G8 and EU summits.

The spokesman rejected claims Mr Blair would become a "lame duck" premier in the coming weeks.

"The best reassurance you will have is actually seeing the Prime Minister in action," he said. "I don't think people would be left in any doubt that (he) is fully engaged."

The spokesman said Mr Blair will not have an audience with the Queen on Wednesday.

This follows speculation he may, as a courtesy, have planned to inform her this week of his plans.

There is no constitutional requirement for him to tell her of his intentions to resign as Labour leader.

He'll stand down as labour leader tommorow, leading to the leadership contest that will more than likely place brown as the next pm for around july time.

Hi there.....
How do you personally feel about Brown’s apparent takeover?

Mixed feelings.

When it comes to his support of positive relation with the US, and support for the WOT, that is a major plus for me.

His economic record, overall is very good and I have no doubt that he will be an extremely progressive and hard working PM. He’s waiting for nearly 13 years, and I think he deserves his chance.

I’ve read alot of comments around here which paint an overly negative image of the man, and while technically a member of a ‘socialist party’ he was behind the creation of ‘new labour’ which moved the party away from the left, and is a strong believer in that continued path. The leadership contest that will follow will put him against a left winger, and he is likely to prevail by a significant margin. (thank goodness)

I’d very much like to back our Conservative Party, but without going into too much detail, I’ll just leave it at telling you they’re a complete mess.

Thanks for your take on it. I hope your perceptions are correct. It would be wonderful if we had Brown in UK and Sarkozy in France pushing away from the left. I’m optimistic that perhaps we may put on a more united front in the face of the rest of Europe and Muslim nations.

No problems.

There’s been a fairly positive take on the sarkozy victory over here.

Even open endorsements from senior labour politicians before the election, which is unprecedented.

There’s a lot of work to be done, and sarkozys election is a massively positive development for cooperation on the WOT.
