WASHINGTON - Fish feed made with a contaminated Chinese ingredient was distributed to about 120 fish hatcheries and farms, roughly split between the United States and Canada, officials said Thursday.
U.S. officials said the risk to people from eating fish that ate the contaminated feed was very low.
The feed, manufactured by Skretting Canada, used imported Chinese wheat flour, purchased from a second Canadian company, that was spiked with melamine and mislabeled as wheat gluten. Wheat gluten is a mix of two proteins obtained when wheat flour is washed to remove the starch.
A second imported Chinese vegetable protein, sold as rice protein concentrate but also simply wheat flour, has been found to have been contaminated by melamine. The nitrogen-rich chemical typically is used to make plastics, but can skew tests to make ingredients like wheat flour appear more protein rich than they really are.
Together, the two contaminated ingredients have led to the recall of more than 150 brands of cat and dog food. Scraps from those pet foods also were used to make some pig and chicken feed.

One of my local hatcheries lost a few thousand fish recently, think was last week.
Can someone explain to me why the tree huggers are absolutely silent about China? A huge black cloud hovers over much of the country. Pollution travels across the Pacific and rains on the U.S. The rivers in china are poisoned. And now they are poisoning our trout.
And nobody even puts pressure on them to join Kyoto. There’s a severe disconnect somewhere.
Followup. Did more checking to see if there was a reason for the fish deaths. Officially it was an outbreak of “Ich” which if you know aquariums know it’s nasty stuff. Problem is that can’t use Ich killing chemicals on fish that is most likely going to be for food.
So nothing to do with hatchery feed yet.
Why not fish? Potatoes, turnips, strawberries, sweet corn, squash, tomatoes, peppers, onions, garlic, okra, etc. are all crops I grow, along with many others. I grow and sell crops grown here and not buy wheat gluten from China. Our government hasn’t done s#&t about our food supply. Why? Will the populace have the ask the “government” for their daily food supply? Probably yes, sooner than anyone thinks. BTW- I use NO Genetically Modified seed on my farm, and never will.
I think it is time to ban all chinese food imports.
I’m waiting for the fish to tell me they didn’t like the feed.
Ping!
Agreed!!
“U S officials said the risk was very low.....”
WHAT THE F...K!!!!
And I believe the U S officials???
If they found out that an American threw poison into a stream, you can bet they’d throw the book at him.
Thank you for helping to feed America!
Why do we need to import these toxins from China?
