Despite the common notion that America remains plagued by a divorce epidemic, the national per capita divorce rate has declined steadily since its peak in 1981 and is now at its lowest level since 1970.

what rate? divorce per marriage or divorces per capita? Fewer marriages means fewer divorces per capita. No great win there.

Huh? What? I thought I had recently read an article about how marriage was falling apart and there were less married couples than ever before. What is this? We have always been at war with Eastasia?

It’s divorce per marriage.

Yeah, the only one worse was the '70s. And the '90s.

Thx, Zon.

Fewer married couples-->fewer divorces.

With the current legal climate a guy would have to be a total idiot to get married.

Well, we’re gonna be 12 years in June and are still going strong. I’ve thought of changing the locks on the house but NEVER divorce. :o)

One reason, if you’re cynical enough, is because thanks to the government, there is no reason to get married anymore. Therefore, the people who get married must really want it to happen and want it to work.

Some experts say relationships are as unstable as ever -- and divorces are down primarily because more couples live together without marrying.

I guess that says it all.

Slow housing market is postponing some divorces.

You can’t get divorced, if you don’t get married in the first place.

Could it be that if you don’t get married you don’t get divorced...?

I think that the stigma of premarital sex and having babies out of wedlock has declined so much that marriage is now for people who are religious or otherwise serious and therefore more likely to marry well and to work problems out in order to avoid divorce.

So how often do unmarried couples who have biological children together eventually split up?
