Racist song performed at police dinner

Plant City, Florida – At least 2 people walked out of the 45th annual East Hillsborough Law Enforcement Appreciation dinner in Plant City Tuesday right after the hired entertainment performed their first song.

“The song was entitled, ‘Press 1 For English,’” Hillsborough County Commissioner Kevin White recounted.

He was at the dinner but was so disturbed by the song’s lyrics that he walked out.

“If you don’t speak English, go home. If you don’t speak English, you’re not welcome here. If you don’t speak English, get back on the boat and go where you came from,” White cringed as he remembered the words.

A traveling husband-wife team from Kentucky, called Rivoli Revue, performed the song.

A showcase of their work can be accessed through a search of their website.

Songs listed include other irreverent titles, such as ‘The Dump is Funky,’ ‘RVing is the Life for Me,’ and ‘Hang up that Cell Phone and Drive.’

During their performance at Tuesday's dinner, White was appalled.

And he says he wasn’t alone.

“Quite a few people in the audience were definitely offended. I saw chins drop. People were in awe of the message they were hearing.”

The dinner was put on by a committee of civic leaders, including Maj. Bill Davis of the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s office.

He said a Plant City business leader referred the committee to Rivoli Revue. He also expressed regrets that the song offended anyone.

Maj. Davis also added that the group does a “spoof on pretty much everything.”

Attempts to contact Rivoli Revue were unsuccessful.

They were lucky they didn’t cover any Stormtroopers of Death songs.

I was thinking the same thing! I don’t know how many joke emails I’ve gotten that are based on the “Press one for English” theme ;’}

I guess some people are destined to go through life perpetually offended by something...

I would have applauded.

And just how is it racist to insist people speak our language. It would seem to me that it would only be racist if certain groups were incapable of speaking English.

I am disturbed by his name, it is a racist name. He should change it to Brown, Black, Green, etc., anything but White!

Oh, and WTH could possibly be “racist” about that kinda song? Does it single out any particular ethnic group?

Hey Kevin - your mama called; your clean underoo’s are ready!
