WASHINGTON: In a challenge to Republican orthodoxy, Rudolph Giuliani insisted in an interview Sunday that he supported abortion rights and gun control and that this should not disqualify him from winning the party's presidential nomination.
"In a society like ours, where people have very, very different consciences about this, it's best for us to respect each other's differences and allow for choice," he said. Still, he said on Fox News, "I am open and will continue to be open to ways to limit abortion."
Giuliani also said that if elected president, he would try to appoint the best people to the Supreme Court, regardless of their abortion views.
His interview with Fox News was aired two days after an appearance in Houston, in which, in a forceful summation of the case for his candidacy, he said that Republicans needed to be tolerant of dissenting views if they wanted to retain the White House.
In his speech to a conservative audience at Houston Baptist University, Giuliani, former mayor of New York, acknowledged that his views on social issues were out of line with those of many Republicans.

Giuliani said he supported allowing gay men and lesbians to enter into domestic partnerships but not to marry.
He said that his advocacy for tough gun control measures while he was mayor of New York had been central to reducing crime there. And he described himself as an advocate of a view of the Second Amendment that holds that it permits citizens to bear arms.
As he told Fox, "The Second Amendment to the Constitution is about as clear as it can be. It gives people the individual right to bear arms."
"I think that is a correct interpretation," he said. "That means that any restrictions have to be reasonable."

I think you’re exactly right, Jim. Also, he knows he can’t continue to claim to be against abortion, as he did earlier—conservatives are on to him.
This rino isn’t going anywhere but down. No way he wins the nomination with his liberal views.
George Orwell predicted Giuliani's type.
I'm hoping that before it's all over hizzonor the mayor will wind up in honored retirement and we will have a conservative as Republican candidate for president.
He believes in a woman's choice to have an abortion, but not an individual's choice to carry a firearm. Interesting how one can interpret "reasonable" so many different ways.
You post a lot of hit pieces on Rudy, I notice. Are you trying to say something, Jim? LOL
Right up until your choice involves a firearm.
L
Stick a fork in him.
If I HAVE to, I will vote for this guy—but my daily prayer is that I won’t have to.
“He believes in a woman’s choice to have an abortion, but not an individual’s choice to carry a firearm. Interesting how one can interpret “reasonable” so many different ways”
Good point, but Rudy only abides by laws that he AGREES with.
Firearms
Sanctuary cities, et, al. He disregards the law.
“that means any restrictions have to be reasonable” huh? who decides what is “reasonable” rooty? when? how? what?this fruitloop just keeps on sticking his foot in it everytime he opens his gun grabbing yap. keep talking clown, there are still those who are not onto your liberal agenda yet. (keep talking about how murdering babies is okay also rooty.)
“Stick a fork in him”
In his tongue?? : )
MONK I was hearing on FOX News he flipped flop on abortion issue I THINK
I think we are giving Freeper headache better watch it I hear Rudy has “Friends” if you know what I mean one of us turn out deadddd and that be Law and Order reset in the future
Maybe it “shouldn’t” but it will. Just as it would disqualify Rudy from the Dummie nomination if he was for reversal of Roe v. Wade and promoted the idea of mandatory gun ownership for all Americans.
The man’s a typical northeast liberal, incapable of understanding how anyone but a leftist might think about policy issues of import.
Rudy and the Right
Just what Republicans don't need: an abortion brawl.

As if Republicans don't have enough problems, their Presidential candidates and interest groups seem eager to re-stage a fight over abortion the American public doesn't want to hear. Blame both Rudy Giuliani and his conservative critics, but if the GOP wants to lose in 2008 they should keep this up. .........
Mr. Giuliani has his strengths and weaknesses, but he shouldn't be disqualified for the nomination because of his views on a single issue that a President can't do much to change other than through the courts. The only victor in a drawn-out GOP abortion donnybrook will be the Democrat who winds up in the White House.
