I strongly encourage them to talk with friends or family and not worry the guys but why would anyone want to go public with their problems?

She may have a son in the service but has she ever been very young and by herself for the first time? Maybe with a baby or two? Has she ever been completely responsible for too many bills and not enough money, fixing the car, going thru a hurricane or earthquake for the first time alone, staying up all night because of strange noises...that kind of stuff. My youngest DIL did not even know how to drive. She did fine but there were lots of calls and fears that she couldn’t worry my son about and had to handle herself.

She does have a hang up as far as her feeling that orphaned kids should never seek out their birth parents, though.

How would they do this? Ouija board?

I do like Dr. Laura, but I agree with you here.

If you’re going to go air your laundry on public radio (or TV in the case of Dr. Phil) you’ve got to have some expectation of getting put on the spot, in maybe not the nicest way.

I also really don’t understand those who would call in like that, but I enjoy listening to the show (though indeed, her voice gets to me after a while).

The only thing I questioned was her recommendation that everyone should go through two years of military training, but no draft. That’s a lot of time if you aren’t going to make use of people. We have enough govt interference in our lives as it is.

It could be part time military training. For example, at one time in the US, men who attended most colleges were required to do some military training. The land grant colleges were required to have military training. It is really only in recent years that the US military has been demonized and marginalized.

Today, Americans are fatter than ever. Fewer Americans than ever have firearm skills. Etc., etc.

You could tie it in with education grants. Take a loan or 1 years of service for every 12-16 hours of courses.

A big part of the problem is that a large percentage of servicemen are very young and have even younger wives, often poorly educated. If you’re 18 years old with a baby and your husband is off in Iraq, it’s normal to feel lonely and overwhelmed. A college friend of mine married a Naval Academy grad, and during the first Iraq war, found herself playing “mom” to lots of teenaged wives of sailors who’d been deployed. My friend (whose husband had also been deployed) was more than happy to help out, but as a fairly new military wife, she was pretty to startled to discover the helplessness of many of these young wives and mothers. The gulf between her (bachelor’s and master’s degrees in math) and them (mostly either high school diploma only or high school drop-outs) was huge — plenty of them didn’t even know how to balance a checkbook.

Well...I haven’t read through all of the responses, so perhaps I will get flamed here.

Dr. Laura is right on this one.
But I can only speak from my own personal experience.

My hubby was deployed for nearly a year when my kids were 5 WEEKS old and 3 YEARS old.
We have NO family in our area and we are not near a base.
We were completely and totally on our own.

And, although we missed him terribly, we could not have been prouder and supported him every minute.

I feel lucky to live in a time where:
** I did not have to CHECK the newspaper to see if he was dead.
** I had e-mail most of the time
** I had occasional phone contact
** Letter exchanges took WEEKS rather than several months or not at all
** I generally knew WHERE he was
** I generally knew what he was doing.

I live in a very liberal part of the world (Seattle) so perhaps it was the constant attacks on the military that got me to this mind set.
Regardless, there are few things that I can do for my country.
One of them is to support my husband and his mission by doing a good job representing our family and our country.

Complaining and whining IS NOT a good representation.

We wives should be (and mostly are) better than that.

Wives mostly come together and are PROUD of the job that they are doing as MILITARY WIVES.
Because it is OUR JOB.

And one that I am VERY proud that I did well.
And, my husband was proud of me as well.

But .. Rush and Dr. Laura’s programs are totally different from each other.

You’re comparing apples and oranges.

I'm sure the servicemen coming home will have/are having the same experience as my grandfather from the women in their life,

If you're referring to your grandfather returning home after World War II, I seriously doubt that comparison is anywhere near the truth.

That’s because there isn’t one. Someone fooled you into thinking it exists. A fool and his money are soon parted.

I guess that’s kinda like a doctorate... minus the dissertation.

(especially when you figure in the time spent putting up w/ all the lawyer jokes...)

That joke went WAY over your head. I said it never came.

Why is she a fake doctor? Isn’t she a PhD? That isn’t fake.

With all due respect for her common sense and courage, Dr. Laura is a gold-plated b—ch, at least in terms of her radio personality. With her attitude, I bet she turns as many people off family values, hard work, etc., as she educates. I never miss a chance to flip the station to Sean Hannity when Dr. Laura’s on. Or is it just me?

“Tell it.”

She’s right, of course. I don’t remember a time when my Mom whined about my Dad being gone. She bore the duty of Navy wife with complete dignity, resourcefulness, and perserverance. This new crop are babies.

Isn’t she a PhD? That isn’t fake.

Her degree makes her sorta like an AP gym teacher. "I prescribe, uh, um...

... 50 laps!"
