Global warming to displace one billion
The Australian ^ | May 14, 2007

AT least one billion people risk fleeing their homes over the next four decades because of conflicts and natural disasters that will worsen with global warming, a relief agency warned today.

In a report, British-based Christian Aid said countries worldwide, especially the poorest, are now facing the greatest forced migration ever - one that will dwarf those displaced by World War II.

In what at the time amounted to "the largest population displacement in modern history," it said, 66 million people were displaced across Europe by May 1945, in addition to the many millions more in China.

Today there are an estimated 163 million people worldwide who have been displaced by factors like conflict, drought and flooding as well as economic development projects like dams, logging and grain plantations, it said.

"We believe that forced migration is now the most urgent threat facing poor people in the developing world," said John Davison, author of Human Tide: The Real Migration Crisis.

While the figure is already "staggeringly high", the report warned that "in future, climate change will push it even higher.

On one hand, this is an article written by the president of a relief organization during the middle of a fund raising campaign.

On the other hand, he may be looking at a simple linear projection of the number of illegals in the U.S.

With the talk about rebuilding Greensburg Kansas as a “green city” I see the potential for another form of displacement as well.

The people of Greensburg aren’t wealthy people and won’t be able to rebuild if zoning, building codes, ordinances etc are changed to make them more eco friendly.

At first blush it sounds like a startling headline but I wonder if you took any 4 decade period in history and compared the percentage of displaced population. You might find that a 20% population displacement was pretty common.

I predict that in the next 50 years something will happen that will cause most people in the world to say “wow!”.

Throw enough crap at the fence, some of it is bound to stick.

What BS. At least once a decade there are mass displacements of refugees fleeing from tyrants who want to topple the current tyrants. Since Earth has yet to increase temperature by even ONE degree in 400 years it’s a fact provable by observation that global warming IS NOT A FACTOR.

Wow, fleeing at a speed of what, 2 mm per year?

I keep having visions of the skeletons of once-lauded environmental prognosticators, still clutching biodegradable coffee cups, the briny breeze wafting the odor of dried vanilla latte powder into the air. And of course, the water lapping at their, uh... mid ankles.

Memo to John Davison: I won't donate to your cause. But I can direct you and yours to this nifty little Global Warming quiz.

Anyone trying to change the name of this natural phenomenon from "Global Warming" to "Climate Change" is immediately suspect in my book.
