New York (AP) -- NBC's top entertainment executive said Monday that he doesn't expect actor and potential Republican presidential candidate Fred Thompson back on "Law & Order" next season.

NBC Entertainment President Kevin Reilly claimed no insider knowledge of Thompson's political plans, but his statement indicated the seriousness of Thompson's presidential musings. The former Tennessee senator has been making speaking appearances and blogging on issues in recent weeks as he considers a candidacy.

"It's pretty clear that Fred is going to be leaving the cast of the show no matter what,"

This means he’s running. Arthur Branch will be missed.

I’ll bet anything that the writers will have Branch retire in disgrace, after some raunchy scandle.

Maybe he’ll appear in the first episode. His last line can be “Is this because I’m a lesbian?” :p

Arthur should leave the show running for governor of NY. It will be interesting to see if they mention anything Friday on the season finale.

I figured it was a foregone conclusion he’d be gone given he’s a contender for the GOP nomination.

We’ll see.

Maybe he’ll join the cast of a show I don’t despise. Or better yet, maybe he’ll run for president.

As long as he keeps writing pieces like this:

He’ll have the support of a LOT of smart people:)

Jack McCoy may make a run for Arthur Branch’s seat.

It's not a bad idea, story wise. A long-term ADA with a history of high-profile cases? Maybe a few character flaws in there, but it'd still fly in Manhattan. It would let Sam Waterson stay on the series while they introduced some new blood, too.

Law & Order’s Arthur Branch scandal.....

Branch takes bribes to not prosecute a gay basher.

Branch is found to be having a gay affair with a 10 year old refuge from Dafur.

Jack McCoy uncovers documents that Branch is the sole cause of Global Warming.

Arthur Branch is the secret head of both the Trilateral Commission and Bilderberg Society and brainwashed President Bush so that he would invade Iraq.

Arthur Branch and Dick Cheney are the masterminds behind NAMBLA.

Arthur Branch is arrested at the NYC Dog Pound while he is high on crack stuffing puppy dogs into a plastic shredder.

McCoy does carry the show but his character is getting very tired and old. McCoy as DA would lessen his stage time on the show and we would see the Practical and Political side of McCoy. Best of all during the campaign we would find out which of his former assistants that he really did sleep with.

The last episode will show him waving to the crowd with one hand, while the other is increasing throttle on a twin deisel express train after his first campaign stop.

Art imitating life. Or would that be life imitating art? No matter, Fred. Damn the torpedos and full speed ahead on this D.C.-bound rattler.
