This is what a speech by Maria Shriver on "work-life balance" to employees at Google headquarters Tuesday looked like:
Shriver sits casually in a director's chair up front, talking about the challenges of being California's first lady, a mother of four, a stand-in for Oprah and Larry King and an advocate for numerous causes.
A sea of open laptops balances on the knees of multi-tasking Google employees who fill the crowded assembly room. Engineer Brian Schneirow flips his open, googles Maria Shriver and hits enter.
More than a dozen images of her pop up: on a magazine cover, at her wedding with Arnold, in a bathing suit with her shirtless husband from his body-building years.
Shriver, in a white linen suit, talks about her three teenagers and 9-year-old and how she thinks maternity leave for parents during the teen years isn't such a bad idea.
Schneirow, in a black Google sweatshirt, scrolls down to a photo of the whole Schwarzenegger family, smiling at a Hollywood movie premiere.
Shriver mentions one of her five books, "Ten Things I Wish I'd Known Before I Went Out into the Real World."
Schneirow does a quick search and scans Amazon.com's book review.
Just what the rest of the Googlers were doing during the mid-afternoon speech with their laptop screens flickering is hard to say. Checking e-mail? Designing a new technology to revolutionize the world? Who knows.
But Schneirow, a 33-year-old engineering manager and UCLA graduate, said he just wanted a little Shriver background. What's so surprising about a real-time Google search?
"It's pretty well integrated into daily life," he said matter-of-factly.
Which gets us back to the work-life balance.
Shriver says it's impossible to achieve.

To make a long story, short.....Maria was at the center of an incident some 20 years ago that resulted in me throwing my TV out a window.
It's not called "maternity leave", Maria. It's called being a good mother.

Google is such a big vapid illusionist trick.
What have they ever done that hadn’t already been done?

Tsk, tsk...Maria, you just need more organization. Lots of us manage without the personal trainers, nannies, cooks, household managers, and millions.

My mother was First Lady of our home.
She raised 4 children on little
She helped at our school and at church
She washed and hung out our laundry on the line
She cooked our dinners from scratch
She had a meal on the table every night becuase she loved us all and our dad
She and dad provided what we needed from their income
Us first...them last
She cleaned her own house
She washed her own dishes (and we dried)
She did her own shopping
She made our house a loving place
She was a stay at home mom and boy were us four kids happy
Now...what was it again Maria said was challenging? I can’t remember. Oh yes...doing all of the same things (except for the oprah and larry gigs)that my mother did for free. I forgot.
Please give me a break. This from a woman who has/had nannies, maids,cooks,hair dressers, designers, beautiful homes, and no telling whatever else has to balance between work and home.
Tell me another fairy tale.
Right, and I forgot the secretaries and other minions who do the work for her.
yes, I don’t begrudge anyone their wealth or fame but for heaven’s sakes...don’t make statements that are so far beyond the pale.

She napped between 1 and 3 every afternoon.

I love Maria!!! I have always had a crush on her. She to me is beautiful especially in her early days. I find her family the best of the Kennedy’s. None of her siblings got in trouble. No divorces. The parents are great. The only problem that people here have with them is that they are democrats, but they were democrats back when democrats were at least half decent. Plus we don’t know if Maria is Republican or not. She could be saying she is Democrat to be respectful to her parents, but when she goes in the voting area, we have no idea what lever she pulls. Give the girl a break!!!!!
Don't you love it when celebrities want to teach us, ordinary folks, how to live or what to do with our lives?
