Senator gives highly optimistic assessment of Iraq War

A veteran member of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee who just returned from Iraq believes the war is being waged even more effectively than the top U.S. commander in Iraq has publicly stated.

A recent trip to Iraq by Senator Jim Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) included stops in the cities of Fallujah and Ramadi in Anbar province. He says "the successes in Iraq are far greater" than what General David Petraeus shared with members of Congress last week.

"The Iraqis have now taken over; they have the numbers and the capacity and they've taken over the battle space in Fallujah," Inhofe points out. "In other words, they're providing their own security," he says. "It's a success story in Fallujah, one of the most difficult areas to deal with."

The situation on the ground in Iraq has improved considerably, the Oklahoma senator asserts. "The troop surge has given us the troop numbers to push al Qaeda out of most of the area in the Anbar province and allowed governance to hold onto their own destiny," he says.

"This is a major change," Inhofe asserts. "This is my seventh time in this area, and the Sunni tribes now see the need to work together with us against al Qaeda," he says.

"They've never done that before," the Republican senator contends, "but they realize now, there are a lot of people in the United States who want to cut and run, and I'm seeing a new kind of cooperation. The Iraqis now have a vision for Iraq and see their place as an important, self-ruling governance."

House Republicans who have soured on the war are "not exercising the leadership they should" but are instead "reading the polls," Inhofe says. However, he insists the troop surge in Iraq is working even better than General Petraeus has indicated to Congress.

The major points of the surge are: clear and control.

They've needed the dedicated Iraqi troops that have been getting trained for this for some time. It sounds like the Iraqi Army is being properly built and is getting to sufficient numbers to make the CONTROL part of "clear and control" work.

I sure would like for the terrorist supporting networks (NPR, ABC, NBC, CNN) over here to stop showing our young heros faces that have been recently killed. If they really wanted to honor them, they would wait until the killings have stopped, then run a memorial to them. Right now, they just encourage our enemies, and demoralize our public.

Seeing those brave young men and women saddens me, but I guess that is our unpatriotic Mainstream Terrorist supporting media's purpose. They should be shut down for treason.

If this is his 7th time, then Imhoff's been in the trenches with the troops. Some just talk about support. Sounds like he puts his money where his mouth is.

How many of us think, though, that the media will play any spectacular bombing as if it is the only thing that happened in Iraq that week?

I have no doubt that the media are a major part of the terrorist’s information warfare strategy.

I’ve often felt they work together via direct communication.

That would be treason if it could be proved.

“That would be treason if it could be proved.”

Yes it would, and that.

“Thank you Senator Unhofe for staying strong!”

Wish he’d tell Ike Skelton to shut up.

The surge will work exactly because it's old school counterinsurgency.

Oh...and can we get Inhofe to run for President?

The showing of the heroes killed is wholly political - to demoralize the public and raise support for premature withdrawal from Iraq, all in behalf of the Democratic Party.

This is indeed treasonous.

They feverishly do this, while at the same time completely omitting - at best minimizing - all reports showing progress in Iraq and Afghanistan .

And they noticeably omit any pictures or even mention of the many Iraq Armed Forces members who have been killed in the war there against the terrorists - and how the Iraqi Armed Forces are not only increasing in numbers and readiness, but also rapidly increasing in effectiveness.
