Whatever...The social conservative wing of the Republican party is a major branch of the right and indeed some of the views are at odds with the libertarian wing. However, it’s clear conservative voters go to the polls and vote for smoking bans.

I’m a conservative christian republican and a (oh my God!) smoker. I didn’t vote for the smoking ban here in CA. What this ban does is discriminate against a minority. One day it will be your toes that are being stepped on, and then you’ll feel what it’s like to be persecuted. Why don’t they put a ban on drinking alcohol? There might not be any second-hand smoke involved in it, but it kills alot more people than smoking does. I know, you’re not a smoker, right? But I did just make a liar out of you saying conservatives vote for smoking bans. I don’t need the government to tell me how to live.

Which is another reason why many social conservative Republicans got their asses handed to them in the mid-terms.

I'm as social conservative as anyone, I'm pro-life and oppose the homosexual agenda. But I don't force my views down other people's throats. If people want to smoke like chimneys in some greasy tavern who really cares?

If smoking is so bad, why don't you nanny-staters just ban the fricking product outright then, instead of harrassing business owners over restricting a product that's still legal. You guys ain't got the balls to ban smoking because you hypocritically enjoy the tax revenues to be used to push your big-gov't socon values.

"If you analyze it I believe the very heart and soul of conservatism is libertarianism. I think conservatism is really a misnomer just as liberalism is a misnomer for the liberals–if we were back in the days of the Revolution, so-called conservatives today would be the Liberals and the liberals would be the Tories. The basis of conservatism is a desire for less government interference or less centralized authority or more individual freedom and this is a pretty general description also of what libertarianism is. Now, I can’t say that I will agree with all the things that the present group who call themselves Libertarians in the sense of a party say, because I think that like in any political movement there are shades, and there are libertarians who are almost over at the point of wanting no government at all or anarchy. I believe there are legitimate government functions. There is a legitimate need in an orderly society for some government to maintain freedom or we will have tyranny by individuals. The strongest man on the block will run the neighborhood. We have government to insure that we don’t each one of us have to carry a club to defend ourselves. But again, I stand on my statement that I think that libertarianism and conservatism are travelling the same path".
