As he prepared to assume the World Bank presidency in the spring of 2005, Paul D. Wolfowitz reached out to the bank's skeptical senior managers. In informal meetings, he took copious notes and asked respectful questions. He knew they had doubts about him, Wolfowitz said, not least because of his role in designing the Iraq war. But he told them that he was committed to the bank's goal of reducing world poverty, that he would learn from them and rely on their guidance.
According to several attendees, they were won over by his humility. "I went back and reported to my staff that I didn't see any horns," recalled one senior official. "He was personable, charming, intelligent, and said all the right things. None of which he lived up to."

If there is any doubt about this trope I urge you to view Sasha Cohen's "throw the Jew down the well" song.
this is outrageous but typical UN conduct.
I don’t think they meant it that way..more like a figure os speech, and I am a big backer of his.
I think you might be right but it should have been edited out.
I think the UN is brimming with anti semitism so I do not consider it improbable.
This is the Cohen video:

Throw the Jew Down the Well
It should be the Wolfowitz theme song for the World Bank.
Too bad he doesn’t have a golden parachute. This is bogus.
I still hope he does not resign.
“Far from respecting the bank, member governments and staff charged, Wolfowitz surrounded himself with doctrinaire former White House and Republican officials and gave them wide authority. He altered long-standing policies and imposed new ones without consulting the staff or member governments. He risked the bank’s credibility and the future of the poor countries it serves.”
It not’s the anti-semitism, it’s the incompetence.
Put away your racial insults, and stop trying to cloud the issue.
(If there was anti-semitism, how could a Jew have been appointed to the World Bank in the first place?? Duh.)
No thanks.
Wolfowitz’s appointment was a requirement of US european agreements on the management of the bank.
They had to accept a US presidential appointment to the position. It was always a matter of time until they removed him for bogus corruption charges.
This is a clear anti semitic reference. The fact that Cohen’s video so easily references it in an international context is a fascinating insight into how anti semitism is expunged from American media to make Islamic radicalism more palatable.
I guess the incompetence was the removal of a conflict of interest by taking his girlfriend out of the world bank.
A good world bank employee would have kept their girlfriend on staff and increased her pay.
Thanks for pointing that out.
Now, lets close the World Bank and deport the 10,000 parasites who work there.
From all accounts I’ve read, Wolfowitz is more of a “lone gun” type manager. That style may work OK in government, or even running a university, but it is sheer poison in an organization that thrives on consensus.
Bottom line, if you can’t be a team player in an organization that absolutely requires it, you’re history.
And it doesn’t matter what your religion is.
I see no intellectual merit to your claim.
If you read the Post article you pretty much find an admission from the World Bank staff that they were looking for a way to force him out. 92 percent of them disliked him. This is what you mean by “team player.” Who are we playing against?
Bush.
European politics is grounded in its fundamental contempt for President Bush and all things associated with the war in Iraq. Wolfowitz was simply prey that they were waiting for.
The entire premise of removing him regards the removal of his girlfriend to AVOID the conflict of interest. She lost her job at the World Bank in order to remove even the appearance of a conflict of interest. This is the basis of the ethics violation against Wolfowitz.
That is ridiculous. Bolton was right, we could lose ten stories of the UN. I think the World Bank should be one of those ten stories.
The idea that there is something other than all of the worst dimensions of UN politics going on here is overshadowed by stupid hatred of Bush.
Team player at the UN means “do you hate Bush? — NO?” You are gone.
This is all of the worst bigotries in the world rolled together and I am happy to dance on the stupid bigotry of this organization.
