Is this one of the cutters that underwent the hull extension? I heard that the CG basically has 4 cutters that can’t be used because the hull extension has weakened the structural integrity of the vessel — decks are buckling, etc.
I don’t think it is. My friend’s son is an LT and was an exec on one of the cutters going through this retrofit. I seem to recall that they started with a 110 footer & made it longer. I believe the work was done in Baltimore, however.
1971 - 1973 I was in the 17th CG District on the CG Cutter Bittersweet (WLB389) out of Ketchikan, Alaska. This ship was made in Duluth, MN in 1944. They decommission her in 1996 and presented her to the Estonian Coast Guard as a gift. And she is still up there sailing around.
Check that out - 63 years and still going strong. I guess they don’t make them like that anymore. SIMPLY AMAZING!!
The Tybee was not extended in lenght. It was suppose to be but they halted it before she was cut in to. The Cutter came out of the Baltimore last month and headed back to Woods Hole for her recommisioning.
