USCGC Tybee Commissioned. My sons Cutter.
U.S. Coast Guard ^

Yesterday my son's Cutter was commissioned. This is a 110' Patrol Boat used as a law enforcement platform. This is his 1st assignment in the Coaust Guard.

WOODS HOLE, MASS. - The Coast Guard Cutter Tybee was commissioned during a ceremony here today. The Tybee, a 110-foot Island-Class patrol boat commanded by Lt. Blake Stockwell, will be homeported here.

During the traditional commissioning ceremony, Capt. Roy Nash, commander of Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England, read the commissioning orders and granted Stockwell permission to assume command of the newly refurbished Coast Guard cutter. The vessel's commissioning pennant was raised and the 16-person crew conducted a ceremony in which the first watch was set for the ship to be permanently manned 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Tybee was originally commissioned in 1989 and was homeported on the west coast, but moved to Woods Hole in 2004 to replace the Coast Guard Cutter Monomoy, which is currently serving in the Persian Gulf. In 2005, the Tybee was placed in a special commission status as it underwent a 7.5 million dollar upgrade in Baltimore, Md. Tybee received upgrades to its electronic equipment and generators and underwent structural work on the hull and interior, all of which is intended to extend the life of the vessel for an additional 15 years. More than 30,000 feet of new wiring and cable was installed, and the bridge was reconfigured to increase operational effectiveness.

The Coast Guard Cutter Sanibel, another 110-foot patrol boat, and the Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead, an 87-foot patrol boat, are also homeported here.

The Tybee was not extended in lenght. It was suppose to be but they halted it before she was cut in to. The Cutter came out of the Baltimore last month and headed back to Woods Hole for her recommisioning.

I figured that the “Tybee” wasn’t one of the “extended 110-footers”. Last I heard they were basically laid-up awaiting a dispostion, but they were basically unseaworthy.

As I said, my friend’s son was an exec on 1 of the 110 footers while it was undergoing extension work down in Baltimore. A real disaster according to him. His Mom & Dad live just south of York (PA), so he got to live at the “Mom & Pop Hilton” while stationed in Baltimore.

My son and a buddy of his from boot camp just earned their Cutterman badges. He working hark to strike for boatswain’s mate. He wants to get qualified for law enforcement. The Tybee is doing the most boarding in the district. He suppose to go to Boarding Team School next week up there at the Air Station.

Your son will love it. My son is glad he didn’t go to an AIDS TO NAVAGATION Cutter.

How old is your son?
