Algerian minister announces results of 17 May legislative elections

Algerian Minister of State, Interior and Local Authorities Minister Noureddine Yazid Zerhouni said today that the National Liberation Front, FLN, won 136 seats in the 17 May legislative elections.

At a news conference carried by Algerian television at 0950 gmt on 18 May, the minister added that the Democratic National Rally, RND, won 61 seats, while the moderate Islamist party the Movement of Society for Peace, MSP, had taken 52 seats.

These three political parties form the presidential alliance and had the majority of seats in the outgoing parliament.

On 17 May, up to 18 million eligible voters from Algeria's 33 million people had cast ballots for the assembly, choosing from 12,229 candidates for a five-year term, with independents and 24 political parties competing for 389 seats.
