Patrick rips Bush in commencement speech: Says nation is governed by fear
Boston Globe ^ | 5/18/07 | Connie Paige

GARDNER (MA) In his first commencement address of his administration, Governor Deval Patrick called for civic engagement yesterday, while delivering a broadside against Bush administration policies.

Patrick's exhortation appeared to resonate with many of the 656 students graduating from Mount Wachusett Community College and their families, who gave him a long standing ovation.

Without naming President Bush or members of his administration, Patrick took aim at their response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, saying that in its wake, the nation has been governed by fear.

Patrick said fear "drove us to round up people of Arab descent, many of them American citizens, and to hold hundreds without cause or charge." Fear also led to the Iraq war, the Patriot Act, and "the greatest aggregation of presidential power in much of our history," he said.

Patrick also lashed out at the gun lobby for resisting restrictions on the purchase of firearms and at opponents of gay marriage.

(snip)

Not all students and parents were enamored of Patrick's speech. Michael Connor of Rindge, N.H., said he thought Patrick should have addressed the students. "He was making a political statement," Connor said. "It should have been more about the students."

Connor's daughter, Erica, who received an associate's degree in dental hygiene, said that she agreed with her father, but that she appreciated the governor's appearance.

Deval Patrick is the first Democrat elected Gov. of MA since Dukakis' last go-round in 1986. An arrogant tax-raiser who had several mini-scandals right at the start of his Administration. (And he wanted to take away the people's right to vote re: gay marriage--even though the law demanded it. Don't blame me I voted for Muffy (Lt Gov Kerry Healey)

Patrick doesn't know the meaning of the word. Let the Islamofascists run rampant over here like they do in the Middle East & Europe, and even Patrick in his lily-white, gated community will come to know REAL fear.

Opportunistic, naive idiot....

Ted Kennedy, John Kerry, Deval Patrick...

Wherever he’s watching this from, John Adams must be wondering why the hell he bothered fighting for independence from tyranny.

When did that roundup of Arab-Americans happen? I don’t recall anything about it. Is my memory bad, or was Patrick just making it up?

Yeah, all that rampant profiling, and the camps in Nebraska holding the Arab-American Nisei for the duration of the war ... that's stuff's gotta stop, huh?

What a Nasshole.

I hear people say this crap and wonder what they would do in the face of REAL fear. Like your neighbors spying on you and your friends start disappearing, one by one.

And that’s saying something.

Fear of radical leftists who want more terrorists to attack us, and to turn this country into a leftist paradise where all money and property is seized from those who have it and given to the collectivity to waste.

Both sides use fear. Conservatives, have us fearing foreign ideologues who seek to destroy us and our way of life. Liberals have us fearing domestic patriots who would protect us from those foreigners.

I know who I'll side with..

"Patrick said fear "drove us to round up people of Arab descent, many of them American citizens, and to hold hundreds without cause or charge."

When?
No wonder the liar surrounds himself with DNC felons and eloquent rapists.
It's curtains for Massachusetts from this Cadillac-governor.

I live near some neighborhoods where there are substantial numbers of Muslim immigrants. To my knowledge, the only people “rounded up” were those who had overstayed their visas, often by years.
