Boston, MA - Romney for President today launched its newest television ad, "Secure Borders." The ad highlights Governor Romney's support for reforming our immigration system by strengthening our borders and implementing an employment verification system. The remarks were made at an "Ask Mitt Anything" forum on April 3 in Derry, New Hampshire.
The ad will be a part of the campaign's spot rotation starting this weekend in markets in Iowa and New Hampshire. Scripts and viewing links are below.
Script For "Secure Borders" (TV:60):
GOVERNOR MITT ROMNEY: "Yes Sir?"
QUESTIONER: "How would you deal with the border issue?"
GOVERNOR ROMNEY: "Number one, we should secure our border.
"And number two, we should put in place an employment verification system.
"And by that, I mean that everybody who is not a United States citizen, with a valid Social Security number, would be expected to get a card, with their name and their number and some biometric information. And would indicate their work status, whether they have a visa that allows them to work here or not.
"And then when an employer is thinking of hiring someone, if they don't have a valid Social Security number, he asks for the card, or she asks for the card. They input the number into the computer. The federal database immediately tells them whether they're available to be working or not.
"If they're not, you can't hire them. And if you do, you get the same penalties and fines as if you're not paying your taxes.
"Legal immigration is great. But illegal immigration, that we've got to end. Thank you. And amnesty is not the way to do it. Thanks so much, thank you.
"I'm Mitt Romney and I approve this message."

Very smart move by the Romney folks. I am beginning to think that he has the best campaign team out there.
Sure is ... turned on a dime. I'm fairly certain he was rather open to something resembling the current debacle of a bill, as recently as last year.
We also need to round up every illegal that we can find and send them home, regardless of where home is.
You can’t say that he is not responsive to the base, unlike McCain.
What if the criminal aliens, crooks, terrorists and narco-gangsters don’t want amnesty? Why should they? Wouldn’t they have to pay taxes? How can you force criminals to become citizens? Why would you? If these people really wanted to be real citizens they wouldn’t use phony ID’s.
NO AMNESTY for Employers or Employees!
You can’t say that he is not responsive to the base, unlike McCain.
Quite true. But, you're setting the bar pretty low, there.
Are you listening, Fred?
My dream team, Mitt and Fred, in no particular order right now.
Good geographical balance, also.....at least about as good as we can get this time around.

This is excatly what I was saying. Candidates must do something, not just generate press releases. This is an excellent start. Major presidential candidate is now actively working to defeat amnesty! I must be dreaming. THERE IS HOPE.
Anyway, there is still a lot to do. Fred Thompson must act soon. Otherwise, he is toast, as far as I’m concerned. Rudy and McCain are history already. It is about Mitt or Fred (or both).
If Romney leads the opposition and defeats the amnesty he will be my lifetime hero.
ps. maybe he is reading this forum.
pure pandering, very opportunistic of him
Okay.
Does life begin at conception?
I’m sure someone soon will attack him for doing what the American people want. It is too predictable.
Impressive answer/video. No amnesty (like is the hallmark of the current bill, albeit hidden in obfuscatory wording presently), employer penalties to be enforced, registration ... but I want to hear if the illegals will be sent home to come in legally.
It’s a softball gift to him. He’d be a fool not to jump on this immediately since his tussle with McCain in the debate. The others will respond soon, but probably don’t have the money and staff that Romney has right now. It still doesn’t get him my vote, but it was a no brainer to swing at a slow moving softball like this...
This could be a big opportunity for Romney or Thompson and is McCain’s death knell. This may be the one topic that gets the war off center stage and gives a good shot at ‘08. This is a position that a RAT candidate could not take.
This guy has a work ethic on steriods. I think most of you will be surprised.
Good move, as opposed to those supporting amnesty.
I want a real conservative. One that isn’t above vetoing excessive spending bills.
One that is against ILLEGALS. (send them ALL home).
