A US Navy lawyer has been sentenced to six months in prison after being found guilty of leaking the names of Guantanamo Bay detainees to a rights attorney, his attorney said.
Lieutenant Commander Matthew Diaz, 41, was also dismissed from the navy as part of his punishment following a week-long court martial at a naval base in Norfolk, Virginia, said the lawyer, Patrick McLain.
Diaz, who worked as a legal adviser at the US naval base in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for six months between 2004-2005, was found guilty Thursday of leaking documents containing the names of "war on terror'' detainees.
In the final weeks of his assignment at Guantanamo, Diaz photocopied a list of detainee names, hid it in a Valentine's Day card and addressed it to a lawyer at the Center for Constitutional Rights, which defends detainees.

Six months seems VERY light...
Give him a DISHONORABLE discharge and disbar him.
I would have given him reduction in rank down to E-1, seizure of all pay, dishonorable discharge and 10 years of hard labor at Leavenworth.
In the final weeks of his assignment at Guantanamo, Diaz photocopied a list of detainee names, hid it in a Valentine’s Day card and addressed it to a lawyer at the Center for Constitutional Rights, which defends detainees.
Aware that she was not allowed to possess the documents, the rights attorney notified the military.
The conviction acts as a Federal felony conviction for future reference [read: job applications]. A felony conviction acts as an automatic disbarment in most states’ [and Federal] courts. Conviction by courtmartial with incarceration usually also results in forfeiture of 2/3 of pay, and a DD.
Great Start! Now why are the civilian government workers NOT being put in jail for leaking? And also the Senators and Congressmen or women?
Pretty sure he got a dishonorable discharge as well. I would have liked to have seen him in jail a little longer, but at least he was punished.
Hell, give him a CODE RED.
Commissioned officers cannot be reduced in rank to the enlisted grades. Additionally, a commissioned officer does not receive a Dishonorable discharge. Dismissal from the service, as this officer received, is the equivelant of a Dishonorable Discharge for officers.
This sick scumbag, Diaz, is no different than the rest of the ACLU lawyers President William Jefferson Bush has put in charge of running the war on terror. You never know when more memos about “ethics on the battlefield” and “moral high ground” might be needed, or when those “rules of engagement” might need updating thereby causing soldiers and Marines to hesitate just long enough to pull their triggers that they end up getting killed.
He tried to win the liberal’s affection, and she turned him in. Never trust a liberal.
just the phrase “lawyer jailed” brings me a smile...
Thanks for the info. In any event, I would have hammered his as hard as possible.
Everything except busting to E-1 works. Can’t bust a commissioned officer to enlisted rank.
