Chavez compares colonization to Holocaust, demands apology from Pope

Caracas, Venezuela.
Friday evening, Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez asked Pope Benedict XVI to apologise to Amerindians. During his official visit to Brazil last week, the Pontiff said colonization of the Americas involved no transgression to local Amerindians and their culture. Claiming his Amerindian origins, President Chávez took offence and compared colonization to the Holocaust. (h/t Rahul)

Acutually, I think Rahul was being somewhat generous to Commondante Chavez in limiting his criticism to the Holocaust comparison.

Chavez also had some choice words for the Catholic Church….

Finalizó el mandatario venezolano asegurando que Cristo llegó mucho después a América y no con Cristóbal Colón. «Con Colón llegó el anticristo», dijo.

My Spanish is rusty, and perhaps y’all might fix a word or two, but the gist of it is…

“Finally, the venezuelan commander assured that Christ didn’t arrive in America with Christopher Columbus. With Columbus, the anti-Christ arrived”.

Yea...because the prior incan and mayan civilization that would rape and kill their other amerindians were such godlike people.

“Finally, the venezuelan commander assured that Christ didn’t arrive in America with Christopher Columbus. With Columbus, the anti-Christ arrived”.

Actually, the struggle between the Christ and the anti-christ which was ongoing then continues to this day.

Chavez isn't far wrong in comparing what happened to the tribes in the Americas as a holocaust, particularly with the arrival of such men as Pizarro.

It is a fairly clever sleight of hand to put Pizarro's crimes at the feet of Christians. Pizarro came from a nominally Christian country, but that doesn't make him a Christian. There were Christians, even in the early days, trying to protect the tribes, but not many people listened to them. Guys like Pizarro had other priorities.

We all get to choose sides, and Chavez also gets to choose sides. He has allied himself with the jihadists, and the marxists, and he hopes no one will notice.

Bavarians didn't have much of a role in colonization of the Americas. Why should the Pope apologize?

Chavez is partly of European descent--if the Spanish had not come to the New World, he wouldn't exist.

I disagree, he would so exist, hanging by his tail from a tree.

Close, but not quite. It says:

The Venezuelan president ended by assuring that Christ arrived much later to America and not with Christopher Columbus. He said: "with Columbus came the anti-Christ."
