The President’s ratings have tumbled each time immigration reform dominates the news.

Have we ever seen anything like this? A President whose waning approval depends solely on his shrinking base, going out of his way to put his thumb in the eye of his base? No we haven't. When Clinton got in trouble he curried favor with his base by turning harder left.

Since this makes no sense, it must be that Bush has a hidden driver, be it his own motivation or external.

Peggy Noonan identified it :

The other possibility is that the administration's slow and ambivalent action is the result of being lost in some geopolitical-globalist abstract-athon that has left them puffed with the rightness of their superior knowledge, sure in their membership in a higher brotherhood, and looking down on the low concerns of normal Americans living in America.

Bush will not let down the corporatist-Wall Street Journal-CFR transnational wing. That is ultimately his base. They want open borders, and that is what they are going to get.

Prediction: I expect the religion issue will go into overdrive.

The Dems would have to, because Romney is immune to all their usual charges (the Republican is stupid, a right wing ideologue, is mean, is poopy face, whatever). None of that works on Romney. Religion is all they got.

That puts the Dems in an awkward position doesn't it? There is the little problem of their Majority Leader having the same religion. And if it is Obama, he has some of his own religious background as well. You don't have to go back four generations to find polygamy with Obama.

With attacking a religion you've got to be careful, because people will see the unfairness and it can backfire. And Romney is no passive target drone. A candidate as good looking, smart and articulate as Romney has the means to make them pay.

I am so happy to see freepers startimg to consider Romney. He was my man the night last fall when I heard him brag about he helped illegals when he was mayor. Almost every republican will work the wot.... we need someone to close the freaking borders and crack down on employers. Start enforcing those good laws we’ve had forever.

Iowa Caucus is in January.

Yes, but the straw polls are starting to become more important factors in campaigns too.

"T. Thompson: 7%"

Breaking down that number a little more, we find:

T. Thompson: 0.5%
People who thought "T." Thompson was a misprint for "F." Thompson: 6.5%

It would be very unwise for Obama to begin a mud-slinging campaign based on religion. Granted, it’s not his style, anyway.

All the same, Obama’s church council has made statements affirming gay marriage, has ordained transexuals, and his individual church is very much one of black exclusionism and black power.

And then there is the Islamic background....

He’s got baggage. That much is certain.

That said, Romney has been pretty straighforward when it comes to his religion. It’s important to him, to his family, and it instills him with some of his values. But he won’t get into theological discussions, which is a wise decision.

Spin it all you want. Tommy Thompson's been campainging in Iowa for monthes while Fred sits on the sidelines.

We'll see how many conservatives prefer F. Thompson over T. Thompson when they find out Tommy is 100% against ALL amnesties, but Fred voted for amnesty in the Senate and is only against amnesty "at this time".

>> Not real big on Romney, but he IS a damn sight better then crazy McCain or RINO rudy. <<

Romney is not my first choice (or even my 3rd or 4th choice at the moment) but I must admit after seeing him in the debates I'd have no problem voting for him in the general election. He's a little too slick (and not completely truthworthy at this point), but he's a hell of a campaigner and speaker, and would have big gravitas in a one-on-one matchup with a Dem.

He does seem far more "electable" in swing states than Fred Thompson. Fred has a good straight-shooter, tough-guy image and celebrity credentials, but Romney seems to have the common touch to win over swing votes better. In a hypothetical matchup, Fred is currently down by 14% nationally to a political notice whose name sounds like Osama, and that is not a good sign for things to come.

I'm guessing Fred Thompson's overall record in office is more conservative than Romney's, though it doesn't help that his supporters seem to have no problem with Fred's views "growing" since 1994 (abortion, amnesty, McCain-Feingold, etc.) but crusify Romney for doing the same. At least Romney has the excuse that he had to sound liberal to get elected in a communist state.

Right now I'd probably go with Fred as the better general election nominee, but with every day Fred continues to sit on the sidelines I think Romney looks better and better.

TOMMY Thompson, Duncan Hunter, Tom Tancredo, and Mike Huckabee remain THE BEST choices, but let's face it, none of them are likely to win the nomination. I hope that changes. We'll see.

VERY VERY GOOD NEWS

1) Pro-abort Rudy is not #1
2) Pro-amnesty-for-illegals McCain is not #1
3) Mitt Romney is actually running a campaign to appeal to the conservative base and articulates better than any other candidate his agenda and his message.

Romney is only 3 pts under hillary in latest general election poll matchups.

Given how awful Bush is doing in the polls, and Romney’s low ID with general voters, this is pretty good.

I think Romney is today our MOST ELECTABLE CANDIDATE.

“All the same, Obama’s church council has made statements affirming gay marriage, has ordained transexuals, and his individual church is very much one of black exclusionism and black power.”

Careful ... if you let that out , he will surely sweep the Dem primaries!

“He was my man the night last fall when I heard him brag about he helped illegals when he was mayor. “

That’s Rudy Guliani who did that .. so your syntax is confused.

I too latched on to Romney when I realized that Rudy was NOT ACCEPTABLE.

Folks, it’s real simple:
you have NOT ACCEPTABLE Rudy.
you have NOT ACCEPTABLE McCain.
you have NOT RUNNING (YET) Thompson and Newt.

you have a bunch of folks under 3% support.

And you have ACCEPTABLE AND RUNNING FOR OUR VOTE Mitt Romney, who was the most articulate in debates #1 and #2.

Romney is #1 in fundraising, running the best campaign, and is now moving up in the polls.

I wouldn’t count on Michigan. Conservative, productive citizens are leaving or are making plans to leave the socialist state of Michigan by the tens of thousands. Our communist governor, who created the highest unemployment rate in the nation, won by 57% of the vote. The downtown districts in my territory look like movie sets for a depression-era movie. It will take a generation to rebuild a Republican base in this socialist, bureaucrat-infested state.

Fred has a similar record to one man: Bill Frist. The only difference is that Frist voted AGAINST CFR.

Would Freepers line up behind Bill Frist for President? Of course not. Frist has never been a movie or tv star.

Fred Thompson is popular here because he's "electable" , the exact same reason that Rudy supporters were accused of in the past.

Here's the rub: in the flesh, Thompson might not come off as well as some of his supporters think he will.

Compared to Romney, Thompson looks and sounds old and weary.

You admit to being a Romney supporter..I think the post you made on another thread in which you say:
Perhaps Almighty God has raised up Mitt Romney to shame bigoted, self-righteous evangelicals in much the same way Jesus Christ used the example of the Good Samaritan to shame the Pharisees of that day.

Sharpton--A Vote for Romney is a Vote for Satan Post #62

I think you are "bashing" Fred and are "anti-Thompson".

Jumping in after the others has a great strategy, besides being ‘new’ news (ie, not buried with everyone else jumping in...) but he can also take advantage of the frustrations we have w/ our current crop by ‘being one of us’, frustrated too.. decided it was time to give a real conservative voice in this race.

Michigan is a lost cause.

Watching what the Democratic machine did to the city of Detroit in my lifetime and then seeing the entire state today, I find it like experiencing de ja vu.

Granholm’s voting base isn’t leaving... they aren’t intelligent enough to flee while the getting is good. She will be relected again and again. The atmosphere in Michigan is not positive towards a conservative platform of pulling up your boot straps, taking responsibility, and fixing the problems. Any conservative’s message will be lost on the electorate.
