'US Has Paid Pakistan $5.6 Bn To Counter Terrorism'

The United States is paying Pakistan roughly $1 billion a year for what it calls reimbursements to the country's military for conducting counter-terrorism efforts along the border with Afghanistan, the New York Times reported.

The payments continue to be made even though Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf decided eight months ago to slash patrols through the area where Al Qaeda and Taliban fighters are most active, the daily said in a special report published Sunday.

So far, Pakistan has received more than $5.6 billion under the programme over five years, more than half of the total aid the United States has sent to the country since the Sep 11, 2001, attacks, not counting covert funds, the Times said.

What the hell. Who allows this BS!?

We've paid Pakistan $10 billion+ over 6 years to do something they ought be doing in the first place.

I want to start getting a little pamphlet in the mail once a year that asks me what priorities I want my tax dollars put toward over the next year.

How much longer will the American people put up with a government more than willing to buy out the entire world when the entire world couldn't give a flying monkey !@#$ if something happened to us? See tagline.

Their regime is hostage to radicals and extremists. Musharraf has always appeased them to cling on to power.

The war in Iraq has cost 100 times that. This is money well spent.

Taliban rules half of pakistan, still active in afghanistan. How is this well spent?

I’m not saying it is a wrong strategy. But the US needs to hold Musharraf accountable so that he delivers real results.

What is it about liberals that they can’t see a regional strategy or a Global War on Terror? They stubbornly compartmentalize and parse everything. As for madrasses, Myshareff went after them after the London bombing. Their much vaunted resurgent Taliban never seems to get over 500 fighters. It is just spin.

This makes sense for 2 reasons

1. It gives Pakistan a reason to go against their best interests.

2. And this is important, Pakistan is a real life nuclear power a hair’s breath away from being taken over by real life Jihaddys, they have missiles that can deliver the nukes.

While the left whines about “No WMD’s in iraq” Pakistan has them, they work, they have a more than one of them along with crazies and missiles that work as well.

It is my opinion that Pakistan has been the target of Al Quida all along, a shake and bake nuke stockpile and a conflict with the “hated” India to foster unrest with.

For $5.6 billion we should have had the right to send Dr. A.Q. Khan to Box City.

It seems you know very little about the Pak border regions - The Pak Gov't can't control them, they can't even begin to control them without the needed equipment and funding from us.

The $5.6 billion we have spent on the whole has been a bargain for us.....The Musharaff Gov't has done about as decent a job as can be expected (on the total)....

Bottom line is where UBL and Zawahiri (AQ) have eked out their survival is in a sh*t part of the world and an even sh*tter area to operate in or to bring progress to....(and they know it and choose this area because of such)

Do we need the Pak Gov't to do more? Yes (where they can). But cutting the funding they need to even be adequate at the jobs we need them to do....would serve no benefit to us (in the big picture)..

And we gave the Turks 12 billion and Israel 9 billion. Hell all this “aid” is equivalent to giving every Freeper a million dollars.
