SYDNEY (AFP) - Former chief UN weapons inspector Hans Blix, who opposed the US-led invasion of Iraq, was named Monday as the winner of the 2007 Sydney Peace Prize.

Blix led the hunt for Iraq's alleged weapons of mass destruction and argued against the 2003 invasion -- which was joined by Australia -- saying the United Nations should be allowed to continue inspections instead.

The citation for the 50,000 Australian dollar (41,000 US) award noted his "principled and courageous opposition to proponents of war in Iraq," his life-long advocacy of non-violence and his leadership of disarmament programs.

Blix, a Swede, said he heard the news of his award with "surprise, gratitude and pride." He will travel to Australia in November to receive the prize.

The award is presented by the Sydney Peace Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation which aims to promote "a way of thinking and acting which promotes non-violent solutions to everyday problems."

"It is highly relevant that in this 10th anniversary year of the Sydney Peace Prize, the jury focused on universal disarmament as a major peace issue and chose one of the most significant campaigners against the manufacture and possession of arms of all kinds," said foundation chair Alan Cameron.

Blix is now chairman of the Weapons of Mass Destruction Commission (WMDC), an independent body which works to limit the dangers posed by WMD.

Last year's winner was Irene Khan, secretary general of Amnesty International.

Other previous winners include Palestinian politician Hanan Ashrawi, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu in 1999 and Indian author and human rights activist Arundhati Roy in 2004.

Notice that previous winners include a Palestinian supporter of terrorism, a Bishop who has sided with the communists in So. Africa and has been harsh critic of the US, and an avowed marxist twerp.

The Sydney Peace Council shoulds like it is the local chapter of the old KGB-operation, the World Peace Council. Sure acts like it.

“courageous opposition to proponents of war in Iraq”

How dispicable to wish that Saddam and Sons had never been deposed.

He will travel to Australia in November to receive the prize.

Blix won't be able to find Australia with a map, a GPS and an aboriginal guide.

Kim Jong Il: Hans Brix? Aww no! Oh, herro, great to see you again, Hans.

Hans Blix: Mr. Il, I was supposed to be allowed to inspect your palace today, and your guards won’t let me in to certain areas.

KJI: Hans Hans Hans, we’ve been through this a dozen times! I don’t have any weapons of mass destruction, okay Hans?

Blix: Then let me look around so I can ease the UN’s collective mind.

KJI: Hans you’re breakin’ my balls here, Hans, you’re breakin’ my balls!

Blix: I’m sorry, but the UN must be firm with you! Let me see your whole palace, or else!

KJI: Or erse, what?

Blix: Or else we will be very, very angry with you, and we will write you a letter telling you how angry we are.
