Why They Won't Assimilate
American Thinker ^ | May 21, 2007 | Selwyn Duke

Posted on 05/21/2007 11:32:37 AM PDT by neverdem

Today's immigrants are not assimilating into our culture.  Ted Kennedy's Immigration Reform Act of 1965 has created a situation in which 85 percent of our immigrants hail from the Third World and Asia. This portends the destruction of the western civilization that has given us everything we hold dear, from our  freedom to our prosperity, not for reasons of race, but because of circumstances at least partly created by Americans ourselves.

Assimilation is not a process magically initiated upon setting foot on American terra firma.  Rather, it only occurs when one or both of two conditions are met: The foreign elements must have a desire to assimilate or the host nation must place pressure on them to do so.  Unfortunately, neither is the case today because both immigrants and native-born Americans are far different than they once were.

I've pointed out that a nation allows its stabilizing majority to disappear at its own peril (unprecedented Third World immigration has reduced America's European-heritage population from almost 90 percent to about 66 percent in just a little more than four decades).  But a critic could rightly mention that white Americans weren't always viewed so monolithically.  When our nation saw a huge influx of Irish, Italian and German immigrants, there was often great group conflict; ethnic slurs passed lips and fights were not uncommon (amazing how they negotiated this period without "hate crime" laws, huh?).  Yet, there was a difference.

Immigrants: Today vs. Yesteryear

Today's M&M influx (Moslems and Mexicans) is distinguished from previous immigrant waves by a sense of entitlement.  A Zogby poll found that 58 percent of Mexicans believe California and the Southwest rightly belong to them.  Although this belief is bred by a tendentious view of history, it doesn't change the end result.  It has spawned groups such as Movimiento Estudiantil Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA), which advocates conquering the Southwest in the name of Mexico. More significantly, it causes many average Mexicans to have no compunction about imposing their culture and language on the country that has so generously given them succor.

Where Mexicans exhibit ethnic patriotism, Moslems manifest religious chauvinism.  Far too many pious Moslems believe they have been enjoined to impose their faith on others by any means necessary; this is why they will unabashedly demand concessions, such as their own dormitories at colleges and an Arabic public school in New York City.  It's also why they have fought for the right to use sharia law to settle civil disputes in Canada.

This lies in stark contrast to the behavior of most of yesteryear's immigrants.  Like anyone else, they certainly felt comfortable in the bosom of their own subculture; yet, they knew they were in another's land and never viewed accommodation by their host nation as a birthright, and any ethnic patriotism harbored was often trumped by the dream of becoming American.  Unfortunately, today's immigrants' dream is often our nightmare, one from which we could arise if only, if only, if only....

Looking at the American in the Mirror

Walt Kelly wrote, "We have met the enemy and he is us."  The truth is that when assigning blame, our feet are where the majority of it must lie.  There was a time when Americans, like most nationalities, took pride in their culture and defended it with manly fortitude.  Today, though, after decades of imbuing the modern mind with the "Hey, hey, ho, ho, western culture's gotta go!" mentality, this is no longer the case.  Too many of us have imbibed the multiculturalist malt, with its evenhanded principle stating that others have a right to their cultures and we have a right to them, too.  But this philosophical shift has been addressed before, so let's discuss a nuts and bolts aspect of the problem.

Many of us understand how government actively thwarts assimilation by pandering to foreign elements.  Our government will print official documents in other languages (the standard California driver's license test is available in 32 of them) just so those without enough respect to learn our national common tongue can collect our national treasure and cast votes for those who lavish it upon them.  But this isn't where governmental complicity in this problem ends.

Traditionally, Americans never relied on government to achieve most goals, and ensuring assimilation was no exception.  Many years ago, for instance, if a person insisted on dressing like an advertisement for the Middle Ages, didn't learn the language or sought to impose strange beliefs in the workplace, he would have been fired or not hired in the first place.  What this means is that the Moslem clerks and cab drivers who, respectively, won't ring up pork and won't pick up passengers with alcohol or seeing-eye dogs would have either changed their ways or returned to where ways don't change.  This enforcement of tradition through individual initiative is what almost every non-western country does and makes sense.  If you're so enamored of your native ways, stay in your native land.

If you tried this today, though, you'd receive a treatment from the proctologist of government bureaucracies, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.  Yes, because freedom of association has been trumped by lawless judges, citizens have lost control over their businesses, rental properties and, in many cases, organizations.  Privately owned and financed entities can no longer determine who receives paychecks, who will be served and who will be rented to, thus removing the social pressure to conform that the common man would naturally apply via the exercise of his values in his castle.  Likewise, local school boards have been robbed of the right to set dress codes and behavior standards reflecting the surrounding community.  What this means is now you can't refuse to hire a cross-dressing Columbian from Cartagena.  Ah, it sounds almost Jeffersonian...  almost.  We've now traded liberty for perversity.

America is being erased.  The stabilizing majority that forged her unique culture is being eroded through the importation of culturally imperialistic forces by treasonous politicians.  And traitors they are, and be not faint-hearted in saying so.  After all, if this happened anywhere but in western nations, the lamentation over this cultural imperialism would be staggering.  Just imagine if the majority population of Nigeria or Cambodia were rapidly being replaced with a European one.  The only question would be whether the nation they hailed from would be targeted by only stupid bureaucrats or also smart bombs.

A wise person once said a definition of insanity is ". . . doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."  This aphorism has been attributed variously to Ben Franklin, Albert Einstein, and for all I know, Chief Seattle. Given that we have a greatly diminished sense of national identity, Moslem terrorists blending into a multicultural mish-mash, Spanish supplanting English, and Mexican flags going up while American ones come down, should we really stay the course?  The M&M invasion sympathizers may call me names, but I'll simply render a diagnosis: They're insane.  They have turned immigration into an institution.  It's time for it to be institutionalized.

Three strikes might work here. The first two were the Immigration Reform Act of 1965 and the 1986 Amnesty law. If this crap passes, it will be over, IMHO.

“Ted Kennedy’s Immigration Reform Act of 1965 has created a situation in which 85 percent of our immigrants hail from the Third World and Asia.”

The 1965 Act was an abomination, but let’s be honest- not many Europeans would be coming here even if we had more liberal immigration policies. Their birth rates are way down, and too many of them are enamored of their own welfare states in Europe to come to the US and a more competitive economy.

Just look at Ireland- at one time they were having babies left and right, had a poor economy, and America was the safety valve. Same with Germany. If we favored Europeans more in immigration, some Irish and Germans would come here, but nothing remotely comarable to the old days.

And I’m not sure how much we want Russian or eastern European immigrants- the Russian immigrants we have tend to be disproportionately involved in fraud and crime. They are used to the easy buck and corruption of the East Bloc and bring that with them.

So yes, we’ve done a horrible job passing laws, but it’s also true that the pool of desirable immigrants has gone down.

In 1965, Ted Kennedy said that the immigration bill passed that year would NOT result in major changes to the ethnic composition of our population. Clearly he was wrong.

Why isn’t Ted Kennedy held to account for his major error with his 1965 legislation on immigration? He was so far off in his calculations of what would happen then. Why should we believe what he says now on this subject? His ‘65 bill unleashed a huge wave of immigration from the 3rd world that continues today. Why isn’t he blamed in part for the situation we face today?

Is he blameless just because he’s a good Democrat?

It is incredible that after Kennedy’s disastrous immigration bill of 1965 and his lousy in-put into the failed Simpson-Mazoli bill of 1986, the US Senate should allow this two-time loser come up with yet a third losing proposition...and that McCain would actually attach his name to this monstrosity! That misjudgment alone disqualifies him from the presidency. With his rancid history, Kennedy should not be let anywhere near an immigration bill.

The GOP can forget any support from this family if this bill is passed and that is what I told them. As for the z-card being tamper proof, that’s a laugh. The author is wrong. Immigrants do not assimilate today because of ONE FACTOR...liberals.

Liberals become advocates for immigrants because they can secure additional federal and non-profit aid in which to create their own little power fiefdoms. Liberals use immigrants for moral leverage, that is, anyone questioning their motives are racists, and because their motives are “pure” they are entitled to drive most any agenda.

Finally, liberal use immigrants as the new wave of entitlement slaves. “Vote for us and we’ll keep the federal cash coming your way.”

Why should Immigrants assimilate if they have their liberal protectors telling them that America is evil and that the nation to ask them to assimilate is morally wrong because they (liberals) hate what America stands for. To demand that Immigrants speak English and to assimilate is racism and liberals are not afraid to level such accusations against anyone who dares question this?

Is there any wonder why Immigrants don’t assimilate today? Back at the turn of the century if Immigrants didn’t assimilate they either remained at the bottom of the economic ladder, or they got their chops busted a few times until they got it straight.

Now with liberals to coddle them and provide them with handouts, there is less need or incentive to assimilate.

Secure Borders and Immigration Reform Without Amnesty
by Senators Kay Bailey Hutchison and John Cornyn

Published in a number of Texas newspapers the week of May 21, 2007

As your U.S. Senators, we have been heavily involved in the Congressional debate on immigration reform for several years. We have taken a leadership role on this issue because we represent a state that uniquely benefits from the contributions of legal immigrants, but is also uniquely vulnerable to the dangers of illegal immigration. Throughout, this process, our principles have been clear and consistent: We must secure our borders, and we cannot encourage illegal behavior through amnesty.

I also don’t like the 1965 ‘reform’ act.
But
to be practical, yes, the Mexicans ARE assimilating, and the pattern is just like others before them. THEY continue to speak Spanish; but their KIDS are learning English. Surveys show the kids prefer English-language stations (radio) to Spanish; and the kids act as interpreters for their parents (as happened with previous immigrant groups). Trade and technical schools are packed with hispanics who don’t want to flip burgers all their lives.
There will continue to be “little Mexico’s”, just as there have been “little Italys” and other ethnic neighborhoods before; but overall, yes, the NEXT GENERATION will be English-speaking and assimilated.
As for the Koreans, many are Christian, and have expressed the desire to help bring America back to its Christian roots. (They are about as un-PC as they come.) Vietnamese stoutly defend the freedoms fought for in the Vietnam war and have opposed having Jane Fonda on campuses.
Whether we should just grant everyone in the world the right to live in the USA is another question...

not many Europeans would be coming here even if we had more liberal immigration policies

Not true. Europeans are effectively barred from immigrating to the U.S. now in any numbers because Family Reunification became the dominant component of immigration law after 1965. Few Americans had identifiable close family anymore in Europe since it has been generations from when their ancestors immigrated.

There are high unemployment rates in Western Europe and much of Eastern Europe excluding Russia. Polish immigration into Britain is massive right now. They go there because EU rules now allow them to. They might like to come here, but can't, because immigration laws and patterns over the last 40 years favors Mexico and Asia.

The United States is being intentionally re-populated with non-Europeans because the dominant attitude of the elites is that America was illegitimate when it was majority White.

The "Little Mexico" of today is a permanent fixture of mostly illegal Mexican immigrants not wanting to assimilate, sending money back to Mexico, crossing our unsecured border at will.

Absolutely right! The make up and policy of immigration is purposely being done. Pre 65 immigration was based on existing population make-up. Now we are suppose except a hugely disproportionate amount from Latin America and mostly from Mexico. In addition to that we are supposed to encourage them to keep their own culture and dual allegiance to their home countries. Multiculturalism don’t you know. How to ruin the country without firing a shot.
Not to mention that most of these immigrants come from largely Marxist countries and are much more pliable to the will of the government.

I live in a “Little Italy”. The Archdiocese of Boston screwed the Italian Church that had been in my neighborhood for over 75 years by selling the building to a Haitian Church whose parishioners commute to from Boston. We still have our Feast every year which features the statue of St. Rocco in the street. Some of their parishioners told us to remove the statue from OUR street because it offended them.

Interestingly, my father’s Mennonite ancestors escaped to America with no intention of ever learning English or assimilating with the “outsiders”. However the assimilation is pretty much complete. Some from my generation even joined the US military, whereas the previous generation were all C.O.s.

Where are the nonassimilating immigrants, and how long have they been here?

I’ve lived in a lot of places. Whenever I have met Mexican immigrants, legal and illegal, they were nice as can be. Happy people. And they either spoke English, or they were trying to learn. (I can only assume that some of the waiters/waitresses we have had in Mexican restaurants were illegal, but I’m not positive.) We have lived in two states in the Southwest. I can’t recall knowing any nonEnglish speakers in New Mexico. I have met nonEnglish speakers in Arizona, but they are all older people who have a little difficulty. I have known a lot of middle-aged to babies in southern Arizona, and English is their language most spoken. It is such that most of the children do not know Spanish well enough to feel comfortable speaking it.

As far as culture goes, there are a whole lot of Mexican descendants who leave LA and other areas because they want a better life for their children. And they speak English. But they have Spanish last names and brown skin. They must not want to assimilate.

I will tell you exactly why they won’t assimilate: thanks to 40 years of liberal policy, they can’t. All immigrants, but Hispanics in particular because they are the largest group and the Dems want to keep them as a captive voter bloc, are shunted off into bilingual classes, classes and events dealing solely with their home country culture, and the foreign language press, since they no longer even need English to vote or get a drivers license anymore.

This was not done by Hispanics: it was done by your friends and mine, the federal government’s “equal opportunity” language and educational policies, the liberal universities, the liberal state and local governments, and the Dem party ward heelers.

Never in the past was any group under more pressure NOT to assimilate.

If everyone's speaking English, how come 50% of the radio stations are Spanish in L.A., and why are there three major Spanish television networks?

This is true even in Northern California. The entire cities of Watsonville and Salinas are majority Spanish speaking now.

Where have you been?!

You shouldn't use Tucson as an example, because it's an anomaly: there are a lot of retired military and midwesterners there, and Raytheon is the only non-government large employer. Arizona's demographics are still like California in the early '80s. And unlike California, Arizonans resist the invasion. California rolled over. Or at least, the courts forced them to.

“If you want to make people angry, lie to them.
If you want to make them absolutely livid, then tell ‘em the truth.”
