WASHINGTON - Senate leaders agreed Monday that they would wait until June to take final action on a bipartisan plan to give millions of unlawful immigrants legal status.
The measure, which also tightens border security and workplace enforcement measures, unites a group of influential liberals, centrists and conservatives and has White House backing, but it has drawn criticism from across the political spectrum. In a nod to that opposition, Senate leaders won't seek to complete it before a hoped-for Memorial Day deadline.
"It would be to the best interests of the Senate ... that we not try to finish this bill this week," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (news, bio, voting record), D-Nev., as the chamber began debate on the volatile issue. "I think we could, but I'm afraid the conclusion wouldn't be anything that anyone wanted."
The bipartisan compromise cleared its first hurdle Monday with a bipartisan Senate vote to begin debate on a separate immigration measure. Still, it faces significant obstacles as lawmakers seek dozens of modifications to its key elements.
Republicans want to make the bill tougher on the nation's estimated 12 million illegal immigrants. Democrats want to change a new temporary worker program and reorder priorities in a merit-based system for future immigration that weights employability over family ties.

The border/immigration system is an unmitigated disaster that has put us well on the path to being a hispanic country with a hispanic culture in the lifetime of the younger freepers. Amazingly it is worlds better than what Bush and The Swimmer are pushing.
But it was supposed to be a done deal. LOL
A battle won, but we still have the war to fight.
Simple solution.....if your illegal in country you are a criminal....you should turn yourself in for enabling, coddling, pandering and bending over exercises by the congress and homeland security....a exorcism of sorts...when complete....they get a new suit, $100.00 in cash and a bus ride to Monterey, Mexico for free.
Thank the Lord. I have been praying for a delay on this so Congress can get a clue on the impact of what is before them.
They need pressure applied past June, well until the end of summer.
I have much more faith in the American people than I did just a week ago...they’re not apathetic sheep after all. Well, except for Jorges and Juan, of course.

What if the criminal aliens, crooks, terrorists and narco-gangsters don’t want amnesty? Why should they? Wouldn’t they have to pay taxes? How can you force criminals to become citizens? Why would you? If these people really wanted to be real citizens they wouldn’t use phony ID’s.
NO AMNESTY for Employers or Employees!
Everyone can use the time to get organized. IMO, all these “in your face” arrogant politicians need to be dumped and replaced.
