What Does It Mean "The South Shall Rise Again":
The Wichita (KS) Eagle ^ | 23 May 2007 | Mark McCormick

Posted on 05/24/2007 6:03:30 AM PDT by Rebeleye

...he was stunned to see two large Confederate flags flying from trucks...emblazoned with the words "The South Shall Rise Again." I'm stunned, too, that people still think it is cool to fly this flag. Our society should bury these flags -- not flaunt them...because the Confederate flag symbolizes racial tyranny to so many... ...This flag doesn't belong on city streets, in videos or in the middle of civil discussion. It belongs in our past -- in museums and in history books -- along with the ideas it represents.

The civil war was actually fought more over state’s rights than anything else. Slavery was present in states that didn’t secede. Lincoln’ emancipation proclamation only freed the slaves in those states in rebellion. Lincoln himself said he would keep slavery if it would save the union.

To me, the Confederate flag stands for states' rights, self-determination, honor, courage and bold defiance against authoritarian government.

I'm a Yankee and I agree.

Sherman carried out Grants plan very very well. Had Banks not gotten himself bottled up in the Bermuda Hundred, the war would have ended in 1864 in my opinion.

If you read the lyrics of the “Battle Hymn of the Republic”, it refers to killing American civilians, families....

ROFLMAO!

Suuuure it does:

Mine eyes have seen the glory Of the coming of the Lord;
He is trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored;
He hath loosed the fateful lightning Of His terrible swift sword;
His truth is marching on.

(ending)

In the beauty of the lilies Christ was born across the sea,
With a glory in His bosom that transfigures you and me:
As He died to make men holy, let us die to make men free;
While God is marching on.

Do you think "Rock-a-by-Baby" means everyone should have an abortion?

Well, Grant did love an under-three-minute trotter, but when he got busted he was up front and honest about it.

A D.C. cop once pulled him over then was covered with confusion when he realized who he'd stopped. "Officer, do your duty," said Grant. He always paid the piper for his dancing. And he was a brave man, refusing narcotics for pain from his throat cancer so he could finish his autobiography to support his family.

Full disclosure: I'm as southern as they come, but my cousin Julia Dent married U.S. Grant. She must have seen something in him.

It was the beginning of the end of government “for the people, by the people and of the people”.

OK, so had the South won would the slogan be "government of 2/3rds of the people, by 2/3rds of the people, for 2/3rds of the people?" You want to claim that your rebellion was for freedom and liberty? Fine, but don't forget to mention that your rebellion was launched in no small part to keep a considerable part of your population from enjoying that very same freedom and liberty that you claim to have been fighting for.

‘It was the industrial base of the North that gave them victory. Do you deny this?’

If that was the whole case, the war would have ended long before Grant’s promotion. It didn’t, because the leadership and the tactics employed prior to his advancement in rank did not utilize the overwhelming numerical advantages in all areas.

‘If not, then why are you arguing the point?’

I’m not ‘arguing the point’ I’m noting the topic was, as silly as it will read - ‘Grants tactics resembled a steamroller more than a GTO’.

Thats all.

” OK, so had the South won would the slogan be “government of 2/3rds of the people, by 2/3rds of the people, for 2/3rds of the people?””

What was in the Constitution agreed to by all the colonies in 1783? The above.

“Fine, but don’t forget to mention that your rebellion was launched in no small part to keep a considerable part of your population from enjoying that very same freedom and liberty that you claim to have been fighting for”

Lincoln didn’t fight the war to end slavery. If you had clue one you’d understand that.

Was it worth 1,000,000 of you Northerners to keep the South in the Union???

Well if you're going to make numbers up why not ask if it was worth 10,000,000 Northerners or 100,000,000 Northerners?

Your picture is one of the reasons this country has been so successful.

It was only a very few years after the war that folks were getting together on battlefields for reenactments and picnics. Men in Blue and Gray would willingly sit down at the dinner table and break bread together.

In other nations, you see deep animosities that periodically result in pogroms, and general death and mayhem.

 Sure, we still have regional rivalries, but that's fairly natural, and pre-existed the War Between the States anyway.

One of the truely tragic results of the war was the huge general increase in federal government power that has only grown since.

The War between the states was about state’s rights, an issue whch is still highly relevant today...I understand those who think of the Stars and Bars as a racial issue because the issue of slavery, among other things, was one of the issues that brought states’ rights issues to the forefront. However, it was states’ rights, and the federal government has been an ever increasing monolith, and states’ rights are being eroded every year. Think how much freedom the ssttes would have if the federal funding system did not deny funds to those states who did not agree?

I also therefore understand the talk of the South will rise again...Life is so full of nuance, isn’t it?

“If that was the whole case, the war would have ended long before Grant’s promotion.”

The South had help in Europe and some industry of its own. It was logistics that gave the North and advantage.

It helped to have generally better military leadership.

“...overwhelming numerical advantages in all areas.”

So, that’s why they had to force conscription of people just off the boat.

Well, well ... aren't you just a ball of confusion this morning. You do know who insisted upon that whole 2/3 thing, don't you? (Hint: it wasn't southerners)

To me it's a flag of one of the enemies of the United States.

“To me it’s a flag of one of the enemies of the United States.”

Then you are an enemy of the United States.
