TRIPOLI, Lebanon - Military aid began arriving Friday after the United States said it will rush supplies to the Lebanese army fighting al-Qaida-inspired Islamic militants barricaded inside a Palestinian refugee camp in the country's north.
Meanwhile, sporadic gunfire exchanges early Friday punctured the lull in the fighting as the Lebanese army continued to build up around the Nahr el-Bared refugee camp near the port city of Tripoli.
Although U.S. officials said the military aid to Lebanon had been agreed to before the fighting broke out this week, the speedy shipment Friday marked the first tangible U.S. backing of the Lebanese authorities in their fight with the militants.
Two military transports landed at the Beirut airport Friday morning, spotted by many residents of the capital. The military refused to comment, apparently because of the sensitivity of the matter.
Security officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, said that a United Arab Emirates air force plane had landed late Thursday with the first supplies.

It’d be a shame to see any of this get into the wrong hands!
We’ve got a dog in this fight and we need him to win.
President Bush true to his word again.
The enemies of liberty come from different parts of the world, and they take inspiration from different sources. Some are radicalized followers of the Sunni tradition who swear allegiance to terrorist organizations like Al Qaida. Others are radicalized followers of the Shia tradition who join groups like Hezbollah and take guidance from state sponsors like Syria and Iran. Still others are home-grown terrorists, fanatics who live quietly in free societies they dream to destroy.
Secretary Rice worked with the Security Council to pass Resolution 1701, which will strengthen Lebanese forces as they take control of southern Lebanon and stop Hezbollah from acting as a state within a state.
“This is great news!
President Bush true to his word again.”
Exactly. Having Lebanon become a true state, and an ally in the War against our islamofascist allies is a very large victory.
The MSM will spin it as a loss, somehow.

Talk about money down a rat hole!! Please keep watching this situation and report back in 1 or 2 weeks. Track the progress. Rat hole.
If I understand that Lebanon is your dog, you ain’t got much of a dog - and he ain’t gonna win.
One or two properly placed MOABs dropped o the camp shold do the job. Nits make lice; kill ‘em all.
My money is on knowing that Lebanon will not fight - they will evacuate, they will whine, they will snivvel and complain, but they will not fight. I don’t like it, but that remains the way it is.
We should have learned long ago not to give arms or whicky to the natives.
WHich came first?.......
There’s no such thing as a Palestinian (other than the Jews) and no such thing as a refugee camp (they’re called towns and villages). But anyway, this is good news. The Lebanese gov’t has to eliminate one armed faction at a time in order to make Lebanon into an actual country again.
