Condi Rice for Governor?
MSNBC ^ | May 25, 2007 | Andrea Mitchell

Posted on 05/25/2007 12:48:56 PM PDT by West Coast Conservative

On a trip to California this week, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has done so many non-foreign policy photo-ops that local reporters have been speculating she's laying the groundwork for a run for governor. Now she's added fuel to that speculation by giving a very non-Sherman-like answer to a question about having future political ambitions. The transcript of the Q&A with a local newspaper reporter was just released by the State Department.

Asked about running for governor, Rice answered: " Look, one doesn't ever know what life may bring, but I sure don't have any plans to run for office." In the past, Rice has always simply said she plans to return to teaching in Stanford. Since she never speaks carelessly, this is a significant departure.

Transcript of the relevant Q&A follows:

QUESTION: Okay. Since we're on your future, there's a lot of speculation over the last couple of years. I think a couple years ago you were in the news, you know, would you take on Schwarzenegger. Do you have any political ambitions and would you rule -- would you definitively rule out ever running for elective office in California?

SECRETARY RICE: Well, I don't see myself running for elective office. I really don't. I don't think I ever ran for student government, actually. But look, one doesn't ever know what life will bring, but I sure don't have any plans to run for office.

As I recall, about a year or two ago, she had to practically had to beat it into every reporter she spoke to that she would NEVER, EVER run. Yet, they continued to try to box her in as indecisive and vague.

Overqualified for the job.

Maybe so...but her experience in DC combined with a term as the Governor of a large state could look very good on a CV for another elected office.

Never, ever.

Rice is a Bush water carrier and is a believer, or she would not be working for Sr. Jorge Matamorra. For her, Bush walks on water.

No! Never! Ever!

Hmmm... An ‘10 ticket with Condi for Governor and Aaaahnold for Senate against Boxer. While Aaaahnold’s politics are too liberal for my tastes, and Condi’s are now suspect due her association with Dubya, such a combination could make for some interesting down-ticket results. A GOP landslide in the first two spots on the ballot, even if both turn out to be RINOs, could sweep a lot of conservatives into office.

That was an accident; he didn't want any.

Here in California, the standards for holding and retaining political office are rather low.

You’re right. RINOs have no coattails.

The coattail effect is a myth promoted by liberals to watch the GOP commit suicide—over and over.

Bingo. Sadly, if Condi runs, she’ll be beaten by Aztlan Tony Villar. The last Republican to succeed another was Petey back in 1990, and that’s only because Deukmejian was a Conservative. If he had followed Duke’s lead, Lungren or McClintock would’ve succeeded him in ‘98. Such is the destructive power of the RINO.

There is a myth around these parts that Rice is a RINO. That's just bollocks. Anyone who has resolutely stood by this President when others, like Arnold for instance, and people like Olympia Snowe and Collins, were running for the Tall Grass, should get credit for constancy. Plus, no one here credits her for her very non-Arnold approach to the Second Amendment. Be Seeing You, Chris

I wasn’t calling Condi a RINO, I was calling Pete Wilson and Ah-nold RINOs (and how RINO Governors always sandbag the chances of any Republican running to succeed them, and in better than 90% of all cases in the past 30 years, a Democrat will almost always succeed a RINO Governor).

However, with Dr. Rice, there remains concern about her positions on social issues. Her political stock has also declined because of her less-than-stellar handlings of the Middle East situation (at least with respect to the demands made upon Israel). 2 or 3 years ago, many of us were talking her up for the Presidency, but that talk has all but died. Most don’t expect her to continue in any particular capacity under a Thompson Administration, either.
