UMass faculty, students protest Card's honorary doctorate [No Class at UMass Alert]

May 25, 2007 AMHERST, Mass. --Hundreds of students and faculty erupted in a chorus of boos Friday when President Bush's former chief of staff Andrew Card rose to accept his honorary doctorate in public service at the University of Massachusetts, blaming him in part for the Iraq war. The boos and catcalls -- including those from faculty who stood on stage with Card -- drowned out Provost Charlena Seymour's remarks as she awarded the degree. Protesters claim Card lied to the American people in the early days of the Iraq war and should not have been honored at the graduate student commencement. One faculty member on stage held a sign: "Card -- no honor, no degree."

Another sign said "War criminals go home."

Chancellor John Lombardi refused afterward to comment on the protests or Card's honorary degree.

Before the commencement ceremony, about 100 faculty and students sang anti-war songs, handed out leaflets and waved signs outside the arena.

Sigrid Schmalzer, an assistant professor of history, said she believes Card was honored because he's well-connected and UMass thought he could somehow help the school. "For the university to so cynically disregard the question of intellectual integrity when it becomes convenient to pursue money and power is the wrong message to send," she said.

Opponents tried unsuccessfully for days leading up to the ceremony to get the university to change its mind. "Andrew Card was Bush's chief of staff from 2000 to 2006. By about 2004, he should be saying 'Look, either these policies change, or I'm going to resign,'" said economics instructor John Stifler.

Can anyone in the Commonwealth of Taxachusetts doubt that the time has come to PULL THE FREAKING PLUG on this bloated bastion of pseudo-intellectual frauds?

The faculty of UMass/Amherst: not only do they not have any class, they don't even have manners.

All they have is OUR MONEY in the form of their bloated salaries.

And memo to Chancellor Lombardi: here's hoping that when you're cleaning out your office to go take an honest job in the pizza delivery business, you find those testicles that you've obviously misplaced.

I do note the outrage coming from UMass when Romney cut their budget. Frankly, I wouldn’t mind a few more Republican governors taking office and following suit.

Despite all these bloated gasbags up there on stage in their silly hats and their overly ornate gowns, there really is very little decorum left in the world these days. And I say this as a 20-something who just shakes his head. It’s only liberals who pull this nonsense. There is a grand arrogance in the way they go about their lives, applying separate sets of rules to those who do and do not agree with them.

It’s fascinating to Google some of these idiots and see what they do to justify their ration of milk at the Commonwealth’s abundant breasts:

Take Professor Sigrid Schmalzer, for instance, who pontificates in the article on “intellectual honesty.”

Her field of interest is “Humanity in 20th Century China.”

Ought to be a rather short book, don’t you think?

I wonder if she spent any time researching religious persecution there?

If you train a monkey to yelp and shout every time he sees an American, why would it be news that he does so?

Hugh Nibley once stated at a commcement speech, "Here we stand in the robes of a false Preisthood"

The Godless secularists sure do love to gnash their teeth and whine and moan when anything hurts their State Subsdized Religion.

The faculty at the Amherst campus are unbelievably childish. I am not surprised at all. They did the same thing to President Wilson last week when he announced that the Amherst Chancellor was asked to step down, now they want Wilson’s job even though that is up to the Board of Trustees, not the faculty.

Is it any wonder at a place where the History department are self-proclaimed Marxists?
