Fred Thompson: Stick to 'Conservative Principles'

Former Sen. Fred Thompson criticized Democrats and reminded his fellow Republicans of their roots during a fundraising dinner Thursday but would not discuss his own ambitions for the White House.

"I'm not here to make a pitch tonight. I'm here to support what you're doing," said Thompson, who is considering a run for the Republican nomination.

Thompson centered his message around traditional Republican policies of a strong national defense and a limited government. He accused Democrats of trying to expand government and their constituencies and undoing President Bush's tax cuts.

"We must push back and push back hard," he said. "Remember how we won in the 1980. We stuck to our conservative principles."

On setting withdrawal deadlines for U.S. troops in Iraq he said: "Our choice is not whether or not we will fight. Our choice is where we will fight. ... And the only debate going on with regard to this most important issue facing our country on the Democratic side of the aisle is the date of our surrender."

Thompson was the keynote speaker at the annual Prescott Bush Awards Dinner, named for President Bush's grandfather, a U.S. senator from Connecticut from 1952 to 1963.

I like that he's attacking the Defeatocrats and not other Republican candidates.

Good point - something else lacking in the top 4 or 5 GOP hopefuls.

"Our choice is not whether or not we will fight. Our choice is where we will fight. ...

I'm glad that to see that Fred gets it. Our enemy wants to fight us. If we do not fight them in Iraq they will find some other place to fight us. I really do not get the stupidity of the American people. They seem to thing that if we leave Iraq the fight will be over. They seem to think that the radical Islam will be happy with achieving victory in Iraq. Radical Islam will not be happy. That is why it is called radical. They will look for other places to fight us and it will not longer be our choice just like it was not our choice Sept. 11 2001.

“President Bush’s tax cuts”

There were no Bush tax cuts only tax deferrals. If Government costs are not cut, you are not cutting taxes.

As much as I like Fred Thompson, I believe I like Duncan Hunter just as much. I’ve got some deciding to do over the next year.
