Articles like this one are an attempt to make weak minded people change their minds because they are afraid of being labeled racist.

P.C. is like the Emperor's New Clothes. All these people say the same thing so they won't appear out of step with the opinion makers. (They can't be this laughably stupid}. They are just hiding their pathetic fear of being called names that they call disbelievers racist, sexist, homophobic, etc. They go along with this nonsense so they'll be considered enlightened.

They are trying to shut the truthful child up so they won't have to admit that the emperor really is naked and that they were conned by their own vanity.

I was deployed with a soldier whose wife (also a soldier) was an American with Mexican heritage. IIRC she was born in the US but had many relatives who were immigrants (both legal and other...).

At the time we were deployed they called for Mexicans to stay away from work on a certain day to show how important they were. Her family was pressuring her to do it but she argued that she could get in trouble.

I told the Soldier that I welcome legal immigrants (regardless of race and nation of origin) who come here looking for a better life. They must learn English so they can reach their full potential.

I likened it to the concept that if you knock on my door and ask for help I will grant, in God’s name, all that my house can afford. If you come through my window seeking to do evil you will have earned violence.

He repeated my words to his wife the next time she spoke. She said she had to think about what I had said. No one ever explained it to her that way.

How much welfare did the Germans, Swedes, the Irish, Italians, Poles, and Jews take once they got to the US? I’d say VERY LITTLE, IF ANY!”

My Norwegian ancestors came here LEGALLY. They never took a dime of welfare or any program. My Grandfather became a well-respected banker who put his 3 kids thru all 4 years of the Univ of Wisconsin during the 20’s- 2 females and one male. Unheard of during that time. Women didn’t get that kind of education!

Linda Chavez needs to shove this “Opinion” where the sun never shines, IMO.

My Uncle ((a Vet of 28.5 years) Thanks Uncle Robert and all vets) asked me this question today, and here is as good of a place as any to ask it. He also wanted me to “get the word out”.....
“Once all of these illegals get amnesty will they be required to register for the draft”?

Maybe someone here knows or can find out.

Some people just don't like Mexicans — or anyone else from south of the border.

Gimme a break.

I don't like people who break into my country -- don't care if it's four million Germans, four million Chinese, or four million Mexicans. It's the "break into my country" part that gets me.

Mexico protects it's southern borders from South Americans trying to get into their country - are Mexicans also "xenophobes"?

“What is said today of the Mexicans, Guatemalans, Salvadorans and others was once said of Germans, Swedes, the Irish, Italians, Poles, Jews and others”

The Germans, Swedes, the Irish, Italians, Poles, Jews and others all came through Ellis Island as REAL immigrants...

And this female doesnt quite go back far enough...

The immigrants who came here during the Civil war were consripted right off the boats..does she want that to happen now? or is she content with the illegal aliens not fighting in Iraq for “their” country?

“The only difference is that in the past, the xenophobes could speak freely, unconstrained by a veneer of political correctness”

That’s right..at one time the COTUS was the law of the land...free speech was protected..

I disagree on some level. This IS a cultural matter. I don’t think most Americans feel the same way about Chinese (illegal or not) immigrants as they do about Mexicans. We aren’t pressing 2 to hear Chinese or any such and we don’t see the same crimes and disrespect for the law from the illegal Chinese (the ones that aren’t captives in some house somewhere.)

Germans, Swedes, Irish and Jews were all more able, for various reasons, to assimilate and were FAR removed geographically from the homeland. Their ethnic pride showed in their enclaves but it was not separate from their American pride. The ethnic pride of Mexicans is often NATIONALISTIC pride and they do not consider themselves Americans first.

Going beyond that, even if we legalized ALL of them TOMORROW, does anyone think they’d all be in line to get car insurance, to acquire business licenses, pay social security, have normal occupancy levels for an apt/house, not drink and drive, engage in criminal gang activity, etc?

Or would it merely empower them further to diminish the quality of life in America?

Two more differences between earlier generations of immigrants and modern Hispanic immigrants are that the latter are coming mostly from a country that

a) is contiguous with the U.S.

and

b) has a historical claim to our territory

This is a very important point.

Interestingly, it works both ways (and may be a hint to the larger forces at work here):

Mexico has oil.

We must realize that Linda Chavez is an 8th generation American from Mexico. She has held her MEXICAN-American heritage very close and very strong. She will defend the illegal immigration of Mexicans into this country without the legal means of applying, then entering this country. She lives in Washington DC or Arlington or one of the other states around DC. She does not have the privelege of dealing with the non-English speaking South Americans that we do, “on the border”. They expect us to learn Spanish. I already speak 5 languages, 2 European and 3 American Aboriginese, why do I need to learn Spanish? They are the foreigners, I’m an American, since before the first Eurpoeans set foot on this continent, let along the Mexicans. During the American/Mexican War, the northern Mexicans helped the American troops. We should, then, have annexed Northern Mexicao into the American Union. They would have been better off, because they are mostly Indians, people who were here before the Spanish invaded their part of the continent. Now we must deal with with Mexican who are mostly of the Indian Nation that first settled that country before the Spanish took it over and made the Indians 3rd world citizens. The cross-breeds and the Indians are the poorest of the poor in that country and come here because their country will not take the time or energy to incorporate them into their society. The European/Mexican nation is of the old world thinking. “We are the superior people, and these “natives” are to be expoloited. This has been going on since the 15 hundreds and the Indians there have not caught on. The reason so many of them are coming to this country. I sometimes resent the attitude of the “new” Mexicans in this country, because they think they are the privileged few. They are not, they are the “new comers” and must learn our ways, and leave their ways behind them. If only our weak kneed politicans had the comption to say so. I say if often, one of the reasons I’m no longer invited to Mexican parties.

Do you realize if this AMNESTY happens we are in effect creating the equivilent of adding over 17 more states to this country?

One thing that confuses me about the "we'll be adding" line of reasoning is: aren't the illegals already here? Granting them amnesty, or whatever allows them to stay, won't be "adding" anything, really.

Furthermore, this statistic is really, really misleading -- it acts as if "1 state" is some kind of equal unit, but in fact, the states listed are the 17 least populous. There are less than a million people in the state of Wyoming -- if we had 17 more "Wyomings" in population, you'd hardly notice.

Just sayin'.

Very, very interesting perspective, tillacum. Thanks so much for taking the time to write it out so cogently. (#109)

We should, then, have annexed Northern Mexico into the American Union

Yes. I think what's old has become new again. I give it ten years.

I very much agree to a Bracero Program, in which the “guest workers” come here for a certain numbers of weeks or months to do whatever work they were hired to do. That is a perfectly legal thing to do. At the end of the weeks or months, then the Bracero worker returns to his country. That is legal. The Bracero Program was begun in WWI when our men went to Europe to stop the HUN from overrunning those nations and again in WWII when we sent our able bodied men to stop Hitler from taking over all of Europe. In 1986 President Reagan signed a bill to make Mexicans who had been working in this country for 5 or more years, with proof, eligable to put themselves on the road to citizenship. Many people who had Mexicans working for them, worked dilegently to legalize their employees. But in 1996 something happened. Illegal aliens of the south American nations began flooding our borders. Those illegals were needed by the then administration for votes. Since that time our borders have become “open borders” for whom ever. This is a little bit of history, and final 2 sentance are my opinion.

P.S.At the time of the Bracero program, the Mexican workers were invited into this country to work for a certain number of weeks and months. When WWI and WWII were over, the Mexican workers were no longer needed and we did not invite them back. What they saw in this country they liked, and wanted to be a part of it and wanted their families to have the opportunities of the American. Thus the trickle began and is now a flood.

Learn history Smermy. We imported Breceros during our time of war, WWI and WWII. When the wars were over, we did not need them. Linda is an 8th generation American and very proud of both of her Americanisms.

Sleeping Beauty, Mexico has a LOT of natural resourses. Oil is only one. If our politicians were not such sissies and weak kneed wimps we wouldn’t need Mexican oil, or any one elses. We have so much oil, if we opened up our Alaskan, Off Shore Oil, shale oil, Co oil, TX oil, CA oil, FL oil, we’d cause an oil glut and the rest of the world would to third world status. If we’d get rid of the tree huggers and enviromentalists we’d be in oil hog heaven, $.15 a gallon.

P.S, Never trust a South American country to abide by a countract. Whatever winds they sway with allows them to “Nationalize” an American company.

Tennessee Nana, we do have some Mexicans fighting in Iraq and Afphanistan. When they entered our military, they were promised a citizenship at the end of their tour. They will have paid their dues and I will back those people. They will be true American, which I cannot say for a lot of our young men and women whose ancestors have been here for many generations and have not volunteered for our military to defend our country against these muslim aggressors.

Mexico is the motherload of North America. Compared to Mexico, we have NO oil in the US.

Campeche Sound Cantarell Field — 15-20 billion

Chicontepec Chicontepec Fields — 17 billion

Check out the list on Wikipedia:
