Troops Fire Upon Protesters in Venezuela

CARACAS, Venezuela - National Guard troops fired tear gas and rubber bullets Monday into a crowd of protesters angry over a decision by President Hugo Chavez that forced a critical television station off the air.

University students blocked one lane of a major highway hours after Radio Caracas Television ceased broadcasting at midnight and was replaced with a new state-funded channel. Chavez had refused to renew RCTV's broadcast license, accusing it of "subversive" activities and of backing a 2002 coup against him.

Two students were injured by rubber bullets and a third was hit with a tear gas canister, said Ana Teresa Yepez, an administrator at Caracas' Metropolitan University. She said about 20 protesters were treated for inhaling tear gas.

“Chavez is the type of world leader the Democrat Party approves of.

A totalitarian state is the result.”

You are correct sir. For all his blustering, Chavez is a brilliant tactician. First, gain American support for his socialist programs, give some free oil to the poor, give contributions to the Dems and through Citgo. Then, once you have mainstream support of the American left, crack down on your people, take all private enterprise and freedoms away then use a heavy hand to put down rebellion. The Dems and people like Danny Glover have blood on their hands. Of course they don’t care, it will be those here on this forum and true American patriots dealing with their treachery all over the globe over the next decade.

I doubt it. Hugo has got his spying and enforcement infrastructure in place, and the reason he removed this “opposition” channel is that he didn’t want people getting even the remotest idea that there was any opposition to him. Jimmy Carter and the entire US State Dept is on Hugo’s side, so I’d say the “opposition” in VZ is simply up a creek.

Is this getting ANY mention in the drive by media? I’ve seen it only on FOX.

There is one thing Castro failed to tell Chavez and that is his success in Cuba was because HIS people are mostly peasantry, very poor and unarmed. Chavez is going to find out, hopefully in time, that HIS people are going to revolt against Communism and eliminate him with extreme prejudice.

Save your country, Venezuelans, we in America are going to prevent the same thing happening in here in 2008.

There have been some fragments on Spanish (in Spain) television, I believe. I first saw this reported early this morning US time in the Spanish press - only a few hours after it happened, but mid-day for Spain.

I found Venezuela to be creepy when I was there many years before Chavez

.Those mountainsides crammed with thousands of shacks are unbelievable. I can envision the shirtless ones descending like army ants and destroying Chavez' Peronist visions of grandeur. I don't thing the army would fire on the peasants.

Caracas is creepy also. There's like a dark, brooding aura to the place. Maybe because its so hemmed in all around by eerie, foreboding mountains.

The city crawls with pickpockets. There's beautiful walled-off tropical enclaves in the city where the rich people and the oil baron families live. The Rockefellers used to have an estate there......don't know if any of the family still uses the residence.

The local oil barons should throw in with the peasants.

The local oil barons and businessmen/women are in Weston, FL aka “Westonzuela” or similar towns in south Florida, to say nothing of Panama. They left within a month of Chavez’s rise to power.

That is correct.. In fact people who voted “against” Hugo had their lives made into a living hell... The last election was a sham..
