something about walls like this memorial, and the vietnam memorial that gets me. You have to walk it. the names are unknown. you read them. you want to touch each one. you don’t. the kid in front of you is kneeling down and tracing the name on a piece of paper. Not a daughter because she is too young. My bother’s name is not on that wall. The guy behind him and in front of him are. the guy in front and behind him both died that day. the one in front tripped the mine while carrying their buddy out of the mine field. I remember walking into the hospital at Valley Forge to see my bother after coming home. there were so many guys on beds. missing arms and legs — talking and yelling like they were at a saturday baseball game. my bother worked at bell telephone since then as a line splicer in spite of his injuries and drives trucks today. I’ve never thanked my brother for his service to my country.
