Dyslexia 'is just a middle-class way to hide stupidity'
Drudge ^ | 5/29/07 | REBECCA CAMBER

Dyslexia is a social fig leaf used by middle-class parents who fear their children will be labelled as low achievers, a professor has claimed.

Julian Elliott, a leading educational psychologist at Durham University, says he has found no evidence to identify dyslexia as a medical condition after more than 30 years of research.

Dyslexia is not stupidity, the only idiot I see in this topic is the “researcher” claiming it is. When the wiring from the visual to the verbal doesn’t work properly, or differently than most, struggling to associated the visual cues with their appropriate sound is not a sign of stupidity.

Calling Dyslexia a sign of stupidity, is like calling any verbal or visual disorder a sign of stupidity. Stuttering for example is another example where assuming stupidity of the individual because of a disorder is foolishness.

So if I look up stupid in the dictionary, I’ll find a picture of your MIL? :-)

Again, if you think these disorders are made up, there’s a simple process you can do to get them taken out of the DSMV-IV.

Do a study. Observe a sizable population that supposedly have AD(H)D and dyslexia vs a control population that supposedly doesn’t have it. Try to do deeper observations about the population with ADD/ADHD and dyslexia that previous researchers didn’t observe. Prove that the brainwave differences between neurotypical people and people with ADD/ADHD and dyslexia are different.

Repeat your research.

Get your research peer reviewed.

Voila. No more ADD/ADHD and dyslexia. It’s much better than depending on tinfoil hat talking points.

The people that truly have it usually don't wish to voluntarily discuss it openly. I looked at Albert Einstein as one of my heroes who credited his dyslexia for using more of his brain to process information visually.

As an adult if I discover a child who needs help I am eager to give them the same tools I discovered to get through life. Its very easy to spot lazy people who are faking.

Its also very embarrassing to face the humiliation of intolerant people.

Ouch.

Too bad those folks no longer have jobs that Americans won’t do. Some people can “do it”, but have to have hands on training. Book learning” doesn’t work for them, but that doesn’t make them worthless. Jmo...

“Whatever happened to that perfect word, “underachiever”?
If I hadn’t been slapped with that in the third grade, I’d probably still be slaking off.”

...or perhaps SLACKING off....???

“slaking one’s drought” is essentially having a drink of water.

I don't think anyone here at FR would ever be considered an “underachiever”

Underachieving victims with martyrdom syndrome are posting over at the Democratic Underground, Daily KOS and Moveon.org

“I once heard a medical doctor state that Post Tramatic Stress Disorder didn’t exist and that vets with the condition were fakers.
Some people will say anything to get attention.”

It’s a bit more complex than that.

PTSD does most certainly exist. And there ARE people who “fake it” to their own ends.

I happen to have been adjudicated 100% Service Connected Disabled for PTSD. What pains me is that some folks who are actually just manipulative drug addicts will “play the game” to the point of becoming institutionalized for what they perceive as a “free ride”. This allows other folks to claim that ALL PTSD sufferers are merely “acting” and therefore the condition doesn’t exist.

The sad reality is that REAL PTSD is basically “incurable”, although it can be treated with some medications to allay the symptoms and people can learn how to avoid situations that “trigger” episodes in order to have some level of “normalcy” in their lives.

It’s been MY experience that those who “fake” PTSD are self-created losers who haven’t the courage or conviction to face their REAL problems and are furthermore too lazy if they DID. The hell on earth that PTSD can cause to exist for the sufferer is HARDLY something I would choose to emulate, regardless of the short term “advantages”....!!!

I know, I know, but... you really have to experience it. Take any issue, like healthcare, for example, and she'll agree with the last person she spoke with. And that's the way she's always been... about everything.

“I don’t think anyone here at FR would ever be considered an “underachiever””

What’s THAT got to do with misspelling “slack” as the world “slake”....???

Perhaps YOU can explain how one can “slake off”....???

Furthermore, posting here is HARDLY any kind of test of mental acuity or self motivation. For instance, YOU are quick on the draw, but your reading comprehension suffers in the process.
