NO, being unfocused is nothing new.

It’s just another drain on taxpayers. Patience and prompting cure that ... .

No liberal whiners here.
Everyone here accepts their faults and problems and deals with them with asking the government to fix them for us.
Freepers deal with their shortcomings and overcome them; we don’t use them as a crutch.

Not to hide stupidity, but to hide LAZINESS and BRATTINESS.

It's not only real, there are concrete findings about concrete (and fixable) causes: See Bacteria, viruses and parasites may cause mental illnesses like depression and perhaps even autism and anorexia , By Janet Ginsburg

“I agree as it puts people at the risk of sounding tangential.

As long as you understand Linear thinking can be just as dangerous?”

Yes.

But, having been in the Navy, I would have to say that most soundings ARE tangential...at least to the direction of travel.

Does a dyslexic agnostic lie awake at night wondering if there is a dog?

No, but an insomniac, dyslexic, agnostic does.

BS. My ex-husband was born by forceps, which in those days often caused “subtle” brain damage. He had dyslexia and was thought in early school years to be stupid. He actually was very smart but has to this day trouble reading. Nevertheless, he completed college and worked his way up in international banking to be indispensible enough to survive many mergers and cuts and is now some kind of senior vice president. He has nearly a photographic memory and remembers all he hears as well. A good secretary is all he needs to compensate for any reading and writing deficits.

It’s also a way for schools to get more money (that doesn’t actually improve the system). And to drug kids so they don’t have to revert to the “paddy-whack” system of discipline.

My mother saw it as both a teacher and administrator in “emotionally disturbed” settings. She specialized in this kind of thing. She thinks it’s mostly a ruse, too.

Never mind my nephew/her grandson, and now his younger sister.

I do agree that the conditions you’ve listed are often over-diagnosed, but they do exist. (And they can often be dealt with for the most part if someone is willing to work at it.)

LOL interesting observation!

Indeed, Annie would be the “CRUEL” person.

Just like people who TRULY seriously discipline children and dogs are “cruel” these days.

Yet they have the best-mannered beasties. And consequently, the 1s who are most well-liked by the most people. ;-)

When my husband was in 4th grade he told his mother she was a mathematical moron. Sad to say, he was correct. She can’t add more than 2 numbers and when she writes down addresses or phone numbers someone has to check them because they are never correct. She gets numbers out of place and confused constantly. She graduated from University of Texas in 1954 with a degree in Home Ec/Early Childhood Education as well as what she really went there for, her MRS degree.
Her husband is a former NASA engineer. No joke a rocket scientist. They’re in their 70’s and he has absolutely no patience with her math disability.

My DH is dyslexic — has a PhD in Physics and is a leader in his particular field. He had to work much harder than other students, but was determined.

requires a 504, which the parent must provide testing documentation. This testing is done with the parent's (or parent's insurance company)'s money.

Thats right, and if you don't test as a true LD, you wont get extra time on standardized tests, for example. (IQ and Woodcock have to show a discrepancy).

Fact is, dyslexia is not a BS excuse for laziness and stupidity, and the fact that so many people here imply that is quite sad

This type of testing is quite pricey too - any idea if it is covered by insurance? I know colleges won’t take any testing from high schools.

Youre talking over 1000 bucks , and out of pocket. And just because you score low doesent mean youre a "Learning Disabled". If its low across the board you may be just out of luck low; many college programs won't take you into their programs if you score too low on standardized testing. Heres a few colleges in case anyone is interested . The best ones are somewhat competitive to get into. And just because you get extra time on a test or a quiet place to test, doesent mean you get any other special attention. If you want that you'll pay extra for the tutoring, etc. Some of the schools on the list are better than others (Arizona U, U of Denver, Marshall, Southern Illinois are all pretty good)

I figured it was well over $1k because you need both the WISC-IV and the WIAT and those are long and involved. AND you do that and run the risk of not having a discrepency

It's about time someone takes on the numerous "victimization" titles like ADD, ADHD, Dyslexia and on and on and on so commonly used today. These titles rarely make people stronger, just victims with excuses about why I can't do this or that.

Really, professor? Well, FYI, I have a BSEE, MSEE and MBa and am a Senior Analyst (with 24 years active duty as an officer). I also have Dyslexia. It's very real, but can be overcome or at least compensated for as I have.

Regards,

Jag!
