Bush Attacks Immigration Deal Opponents

GLYNCO, Ga. (AP) - President Bush attacked opponents of an immigration deal Tuesday, suggesting they “don’t want to do what’s right for America.”

“The fundamental question is, will elected officials have the courage necessary to put a comprehensive immigration plan in place,” Bush said against a backdrop of a huge American flag.

He described his proposal—which has been agreed to by a bipartisan group of senators—as one that “makes it more likely we can enforce our border—and at the same time uphold the great immigrant tradition of the United States of America.”

Bush spoke at the nation’s largest training center for law enforcement.

He chose the get-tough setting as conservative critics blast a Senate proposal as being soft on people who break the law. Hoping to blunt that message, Bush emphasized that any new options for immigrants and foreign workers would not start until tougher security is in place.

The presidential stop came during a congressional recess, with senators back home and facing pressure from the left and right on the immigration plan. Bush’s aim is to build momentum for the legislation, perhaps his best chance for a signature victory in his second term. The Senate expects to resume debate on it next week.

“A lot of Americans are skeptical about immigration reform, primarily because they don’t think the government can fix the problems,” Bush said.

“And my answer to the skeptics is: give us a chance to fix the problems in a comprehensive way that enforces our border and treats people with decency and respect. Give us a chance to fix this problem. Don’t try to kill this bill before it gets moving,” Bush told students and instructors at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center.

Bush repeatedly cast the matter as one of political courage.

“Those determined to find fault with this bill will always be able to look at a narrow slice of it and find something they don’t like,” the president said. “If you want to kill the bill, if you don’t want to do what’s right for America, you can pick one little aspect out of it.

“You can use it to frighten people,” Bush said. “Or you can show leadership and solve this problem once and for all.”

The bill would give temporary legal status to millions of unlawful immigrants, provided they came forward, paid a fine and underwent criminal background checks. To apply for a green card, they would have to pay another fine, learn English, return to their home country and wait in line.

The plan also would create a guest worker program. It would allow foreign laborers to come to the U.S. for temporary stints, yet with no guarantee they can eventually gain citizenship.

Both the new visa plan and the temporary worker program are contingent on other steps coming first. Those include fencing and barriers along the Mexico border, the hiring of more Border Patrol agents and the completion of an identification system to verify employees’ legal status.

The legislation would also reshape future immigration decisions. A new point system would prioritize skills and education over family in deciding who can immigrate.

Georgia’s senators both played leading roles in producing Bush’s deal with the Senate. Yet they have also said they may not support the final bill, depending upon how it is amended.

Bush chastised those who say the proposal offers amnesty to illegal immigrants. He called it empty political rhetoric.

Conversation with a Senator -What does AMNESTY look like?
FreeRepublic.com ^ | May 27, 2007 | KimberlyGG

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1840655/posts

My NEXT phone call to Senators Voinovich and Brown:

Hello, My name is Kimberly ..... and I would like to leave a message for Senator......

“Oh, its you, again” (I’m just waiting for THAT response!)

Yes, it’s me...I’d like to know if Senator Voinovich is aware that there are far more than 12 million illegal aliens in this country already and it is clear that our government’s use of that number is entirely meant to mislead the public.

“Is that your message?”.

Yes, I resent continuing to be treated as if I’m stupid. Apparently our Senators aren’t aware that Homeland Security has reported that 10 million illegal aliens entered the country just last year alone?

“That it?”

No. Actually, it isn’t...I’d also like you to give this message to Senator V. as well, so please take this down....Senator V., are you aware that according to the 2000 census, 18,785,867 was the total populations combined of Wyoming, Dist of Columbia, Vermont,...are you writing this down?

“Yes ma’am”

Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Delaware.

“Is there more”

Yes. Montana, Rhode Island, Hawaii, and New Hampshire. Are you still writing this down?

“Yes mam”

Maine, Idaho, Nebraska, West Virgina, New Mexico AND AND Nevada.

Now, can you read that message back to me, I’d like to make certain that before Senator Voinovich passes AMNESTY for illegal aliens, that he knows EXACTLY the extent to which he is destroying this country.

Go ahead, I’m listening....
__________________________________________
Do you realize if this AMNESTY happens we are in effect creating the equivilent of adding over 17 more states to this country? And that’s not even considering the chain migration that is in the Senate bill.

Please look at what giving amnesty to as many as 20,000,000 illegal alien foreign nationals actually represents. More than the population of 16 states and DC!

According to the 2000 census, 18,785,867 is the total populations combined of Wyoming, Dist. of Columbia, Vermont, Alaska, North Dakota, South Dakota, Delaware, Montana, Rhode Island, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Idaho, Nebraska, West Virginia, New Mexico and Nevada.

THINK about that.

http://www.enchantedlearning.com/usa/states/population.shtml

____________

Basically what we’re talking about is building infrastructure on demand for the population of at LEAST 17 STATES!

You know all those jobs everyone keeps saying only aliens will do? We wouldn’t need to supply the JOBS if we didn’t have the ALIENS! It’s them we’re building schools, houses, clinics, Mosques, MEXICAN consulates on and on for. And there is about enough of them working agriculture to produce some of the food they eat.

Any one who says 20 plus million people is not a drain on your resources is hopelessly corrupt! But it won’t be only 20 million, it will result in 80 million if other amnesties show us anything.

Control the border FIRST! That IS YOUR JOB Mr. President. We’ll deal with the illegals after that.

And regarding Iraq...TAKE THE GLOVES OFF! The ROE are ridiculous!

Cowardice is courage.

Wrong is right.

Those who didn’t support Miers were woman-haters.

Those who oppose Gonzalez are racists.

I am going to puke.

I argued vociferously with anyone who called W stupid or who challenged his alleged lack of curiosity but I wonder now if I’ve been wrong all along.

Alas, you were wrong.Nobody wins from keeping this issue alive except the ‘Rats and they win with or without a bill. But for the GOP this bill is a loser no matter what...if this bill passes with significant GOP support it’s going to tear the party apart. Does he get this?

YesDoes he care?

No

While I voted for GWB twice, I have come to realize that he is from the checked pants, country club wing of the Republican Party, the so-called moderates, who value potential votes over maintaining any Conservative principles.

Just like his father.

Dammit! I’m getting really pissed off at the President. You know, I hope that we can throw his current amnesty plan and the insulting rhetoric he’s spewing right back into his face in a manner that makes the whole Meiers debacle look tame. He deserves it tenfold for this betrayal of his party, his supporters, and this nation.

“The fundamental question is, will elected officials have the courage necessary to put a comprehensive immigration plan in place,”

No, the fundamental question is will elected officials enforce the laws already on the books before they ask us to admit 20 or 30 or 40 million new citizens, many of whom may not be candidates to become good citizens, most of whom do not speak English and a large share of whom are likely to cost society more in taxpayer financed benefits than they can ever hope to contribute in taxes.

There is a middle ground between deporting everyone and giving everyone amnesty. You, Mr. President, need to find that middle ground and not just cater to one extreme by demonizing your opposition.

Let's start by telling the truth-- selling American citizenship for token fines is still amnesty. You might be a little more honest by calling it conditional amnesty, but it is amnesty nevertheless.

You might get a little more support by giving middle America, on whom most of the costs of your legislation will fall, at least as much input in writing it as the Mexican govenment, MALDEF, MECHA, La Raza and other pressure groups who will reap most of the benefits from what the rest of us will be forced to pay for.

The public does not know what's in the bill and the politicians are not telling us. You are right that most of the public doesn't know. This is what I've e-mailed my people so they will know at least this much.

These are just a few things in the bill congress is trying to rush to a vote. 1. If passed, this bill will make taxpayers pay the legal bills for illegal aliens seeking amnesty. Tucked away on page 317 is a provision that would allow lawyers in the federally-funded legal services program to represent illegal aliens, which they are presently barred from doing." (Your tax dollars at work) http://news.yahoo.com/s/usnw/20070522/pl_usnw/nlpc_says_immigration_bill_would_make_taxpayers_pay_legal_bills_of_illegal_aliens_seeking_amnesty;_ylt=Ave7aNtDHF1Bvujr6HggxMSyFz4D 2. The "$5,000 fine" appears to ONLY apply to illegals from "NONCONTIGUOUS" countries! In English, that means "countries OTHER than Canada and Mexico"! MEXICANS seem to be exempt from the much-touted "$5,000 fine. Having to pay back taxes has been removed from the current bill. 3. No probationary benefits shall be issued to an alien until the alien has passed all appropriate background checks or the end of the next business day, whichever is sooner. So, if the notoriously messed up government databases don't label you a mass murderer, child molester, drug runner, gang banger or terrorist within 24 hours, you're good to legally suck up all those entitlement programs while you threaten the safety and security of legal taxpayers for four years. 4. These illegal immigrants will be able to bring in family members via Z2 and Z3 visas and will qualify for all social welfare programs with their brand new Z VISAS. Family members qualify for the Z2 and Z3 visas which are permanently renewable. “Z Visa” holders can remain in their “Z” status indefinitely, meaning they never have to pursue a “pathway to citizenship.” They’d also be allowed to get Social Security numbers and benefits from some welfare programs. (this will add another 60 to 100 million people using more of you tax dollars) 5. PROCESSING CRIMINAL ILLEGAL ALIENS- There are authorized to be appropriated $400,000,000 for each of the fiscal years 2008 through 2012 to carry out subsection (a).<> (2) COMPENSATION UPON REQUEST- Section 241(i)(5) (8 U.S.C. 1231(i)) is amended to read as follows: `(5) There are authorized to be appropriated to carry this subsection-- `(A) such sums as may be necessary for fiscal year 2008; `(B) $750,000,000 for fiscal year 2009; `(C) $850,000,000 for fiscal year 2010; and<> `(D) $950,000,000 for each of the fiscal years 2011 and 2012.' This will also give amnesty to Gang Members. (This will be more of your tax dollars at work folks.) That is for ALL costs, including defense, prosecution, autopsies, translators, interpreters, court costs. Some comments from some of those pushing this bill whose goal is to reclaim the land of the United States as Mexico's land: * *“Remember 187—proposition to deny taxpayer funds for services to non-citizens—was the last gasp of white America in California.” — Art Torres, Chairman of the California Democratic Party *“We are practicing ‘’La Reconquista’’ in California.” — Jose Pescador Osuna, Mexican Consul General *“We have an aging white America. They are not making babies. They are dying. The explosion is in our population . . . I love it. They are shitting in their pants with fear. I love it!” — Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, University of Texas

One step at a time my friend... One step at a time.

Let's get citizenship off the table before something gets passed, then we can deal with the other problems created by this "deal". Speaking of which, it sure would be nice to see our elected officials upholding the Constitution instead of cutting deals, eh?
