Arizona guns find their way to Mexican drug lords
Arizona Daily Star ^ | May 28, 2007 | Western News

Violence along the U.S-Mexico border has escalated in the past few months and so have the number of weapons recovered from Arizona, authorities said.

A weapon seized after a drug-war massacre last week at a Mexican border town was sold in Phoenix, according to federal officials.

"There is a war going on, on the border between two cartels. What do they need to fight that war? Guns. Where do they get them? From here," said William Newell, special agent in charge of the Phoenix division of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Last week, 22 people died near the Sonora mining town of Cananea. Drug smugglers killed four police, fled into the mountains and shot it out with Mexican federal authorities in an ensuing daylong battle.

Newell expects the ongoing investigation to reveal that more weapons in the attack were sold in Arizona.

The violence _ and fear that it will spill more onto U.S. soil _ has led the ATF to make it a top priority to curb gunrunning in the Southwest.

Cartel operatives flood Arizona to buy semiautomatic assault rifles, grenades, plastic explosives and rocket launchers in bulk and all are used to fight rival drug smugglers and the Mexican government, according to U.S. court records and criminal investigation reports.

If we had a wall separating the two countries, this wouldn’t be happening - or at least not to this degree.

Humans and drugs being smuggled in and guns and money being smuggled out. Nothing new. So what’s the story here?

Rich drug dealers in Mexico are buying guns from America. And that’s news because...?

Could it be BATF spin that this is now a homeland security threat? Watch for variations on this theme.

Really, I had no idea you could buy that stuff in AZ. And what exactly are “semiautomatic assault rifles”? Unlike the bogus made up term “assault weapon”, “assault rifle” has a real definition. It as a rifle that fires an intermediate sized cartridge in either full auto or semi-auto modes. There ain’t such a thing as a “semiautomatic assault rifle”.

I'd not seen so many BATF lies in one article before:

Pretty high lie density, even for the BATFtards.

But if an American tourist is caught entering Mexico with even a single round of ammunition, he goes to (Mexican) jail for a long time.

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeere comes gun control legislation! First create a problem, (Guns are going to the cartels), then offer a solution (ban on assault weapons).

Just watch and see!

I'll bet that Arizona Wal-Marts sell grenades, plastic explosives and rocket launchers in bulk cheaper than the 7-11's and gas stations.

“Cartel operatives flood Arizona to buy semiautomatic assault rifles, grenades, plastic explosives and rocket launchers in bulk”

I would love to see the gun store or gun show that sells rocket launchers. That must be a good gun show!!

Seriously, it is against the law to sell firearms to illegal immigrants and convicted felons. I’m willing to bet that “Cartel operatives” fall under both of these categories. Sounds like these purchases are already illegal...

The confidence and no fear of accountability that these little dictators display when they spew this propaganda.....

Kinda makes you think they know their jobs will never be in jeopardy no matter what they say or do.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I believe we have a first!

A Texan just stated that something in Texas was inadequate! ;)

Well, the guns didn’t walk themselves across the border.

I doubt it. When a lot of money is involved, things like walls don’t tend to stop commerce.
