City Tells Store Owners: Take Down Flags or Face Fine

Raleigh — To show his patriotism, Raleigh store manager David Brown flies the American flag, but the city said he and a neighboring business both have too many flags and that there’s a limit on how many you can display.

“This store was opened in 1999, and those flags have been up there since 1999,” Brown said.

Raleigh code allows for three flags to fly. The Fiddle Stix that Brown manages has seven, so the city said four flags must wave goodbye.

Just south on Capital Boulevard, Martin Auto Haus flies 10 flags and has been told to temper its display.

“We've had our flags up since we opened this business and haven't thought about taking them down,” said business owner Kevin Powell.

He said the flags are his tribute to those serving overseas.

“The people that are serving our country, they have to see that we're supporting them,” Powell said. “Until they come back home, we're going to keep our flags up.”

City officials said the choice in a three-flag maximum or a $500 fine.

Are these stories becoming more frequent or is it just my perception?

I’d bet if he flew a rainbow flag, he’d be their hero.

I wish people in these situations would back up the flag flyers by putting out as many flags as they can find in every conceivable place around town.

Well, that’s a bit strong. But I thought the south was quite conservative.

That would be WONDERFUL!

Don't you think these local laws get surreptitiously passed in the dead of the night?

the orders they received were part of an effort to clean up Capital Boulevard.

BWHAHAHAHA!! It's going to take a bit more than taking a couple of flags down to 'clean up' Capital Boulevard. Hmmmm, I've got an idea. Work on the TRAFFIC PROBLEM!!! Not to mention that area up New Hope just after it crosses Capital

NC bump

City gov types don’t do anything until someone complains. I’d love to know the gutless, spineless, unpatriotic scum who reported such an “offense” as displaying too many flags.

Interesting how government in general harasses citizens with zealous enforcement of such minor laws as flag zoning codes, smoking bans, seat belts, etc. And yet, government in general yawns when it comes to something as deadly serious as securing the border and enforcing immigration laws.

I would like to believe that city governments would have more pressing matters to attend to rather than wasting time regulating the number of flags you can fly.

I wonder if there is a law about the size of the flags? Take down the 7 or 10 small flags, and replace them with 3 HUGE flags!

Politicians are so full of fear of being called names, that they only go after white law abiding males and their families. That is the only safe target.

Since this business owner is planning to pay the $500 fine to keep his flags flying can some FReepers in Raleigh go and patronize his business?
