State water officials Thursday morning stopped exporting water from the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta to protect the threatened Delta smelt, a tiny native fish that appears to be on the brink of extinction.

The action, announced in a press release by the California Department of Water Resources, could mean water shortages for some cities and farms served by the California Aqueduct, ....

This is going to devastate agriculture in California. It's the other shoe we've been waiting for to drop for several months now.

It's going to be worse than the rolling blackouts of 2001. Mark my words.

Agriculture supports 1.1 million jobs in California, accounting for about 7.4% of all employment.

Fresh and processed fruits, treenuts and vegetables have the greatest impact of any commodity group, leading to $30 billion in personal income and 567,000 jobs.

Animal products account for $11 billion in personal income and 214,000 jobs.

Food and feed grains account for $10 billion in personal income and 192,000 jobs.

Agriculture is especially significant to the economy of California’s Central Valley where it accounts for 21% of all income and 25% of all employment.

The enviro- mentals would rather see humanity starve than a few minnows dry up in a pond.

Someone should shoot those anti- human Nazi sadists.

It's going to be worse...

Yup. Not many know outside of CA that its' been a very dry year here; low reservoir levels.

Nationally, higher food prices. Locally, that, water rationing is right around the corner...

Just by shutting down for 7-10 days will devastate the farmers?

Big deal they only found 25 at selected survey points. Who is to say fifty were not in other areas. I do not know how many years when the smelt run in Lake Michigan one year they are great near Racine yet lousy near Kenosha. Fish move for crying out load just like those Owls Sierra club yelled about in NM, they found them in Canada LOL

A Republican governor could request a “God Squad” exemption to allow the pumping . . .

California’s 84,000 farms cover about one-third of the state’s total land area.

More than 97 percent of California farms are family farms or partnerships.

California has lead the nation in agricultural production for more than 50 years.

In the Central Valley, agriculture supports 30 percent of all jobs.

California agriculture and related industries directly account for 7 percent of the gross state product.

The gross cash income of California’s farmers and ranchers was $27.5 billion in 2002.

California farmers produce more than 250 commodities from almonds to walnuts, and they lead the nation in 75 commodities.

California produces all of the nation’s commercially grown almonds, artichokes, dates, figs, kiwifruit, nectarines, olives, persimmons, pistachios, prunes, raisins and walnuts.

California ranks No. 1 in the United States in production of floral products and contributes 22 percent of the national production.

Farms in the Golden State produce more than half of the nation’s fruits, vegetables and nuts from just 3 percent of the nation’s farmland.

California leads the nation in agricultural exports, shipping more than $6.4 billion in food and agricultural commodities around the world, nearly 17 percent of its agricultural production.

One California farmer supplies enough food, fiber and flowers for 135 people.

Agriculture supports 1.1 million jobs, nearly 8 percent of all jobs in the state.

Lester Snow the head of DWR proactively shut down Bansk pumping plant to see what happens with the Smelt for the next ten days. This follows the Courts throwing out the OCAP operations agreement on South Delta pumping and the envirnomental agreements already in place. The California Aqueduct (San Luis Canal) will continue to receive water from the San Luis Reservoir for SOCAL needs and State contractors. Cities and contractors north of San Luis are the ones that will begin to draw down the water level in the SLC and may run short. The Federal pump at Tracy recently renamed the Jones pumping plant is down to one unit out of six pumping already for fish restrictions. If this pump is shut down cities and contractors north of San Luis will also run out of water.

The Smelt fisheries group has no science to support the pumps having any effect one way or another on what is happening to smelt. In the North delta dead fish sampled were shown to have been harmed by pesticides. No matter where the fish are found in the delta they find a reason to shut the pumps down as the answer. The Environmental extremists are having their day but will shoot themselves in the foot when the voting populace runs short of water in the next water short year. This year there is a 70% water supply but less than 50% of the water was allocated because it can't be pumped because of fish actions limiting pumping.

CDWP is an agency out of control. The courts won’t even try to stop them. It is a shame that they will now destroy ag in the central valley. Next they will want to reintroduce grizzlies.

Pump shutdown to save fish could affect local water supply
Chronicle Staff Report
http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2007/05/31/BAGM3Q5C2V6.DTL&feed=rss.bayarea

Thursday, May 31, 2007

(05-31) 15:16 PDT SACRAMENTO — The state has shut down the large pumps that send water to 25 million Californians in order to protect a tiny fish teetering on the brink of extinction.

State officials said the shutdown could affect water supplies available to users in the Bay Area, the Central Valley and Southern California. Local areas that receive water from the State Water Project include the Tri-Valley, Santa Clara County, Yuba City and Solano County. Some of those areas can obtain water from other sources, including groundwater.

The shutdown is expected to last seven to 10 days, officials said.

Numbers of Delta smelt — once a common fish in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta — have plunged in recent years, in part due to exports of water to the San Joaquin Valley and Southern California, scientists believe. Recent trawls for juvenile smelt have turned up few or none.
