Sears corporate officials have apologized to two police officers who were told to leave the retailer's store at a Des Moines mall because their uniforms distracted the store's security guards.
Officers Richard Glade and David Coy said they were kicked out of the Sears store in Merle Hay Mall in separate incidents this month.
"They told me that while I was in the store, I'd probably interfere with thefts they were monitoring," Coy said. "I said, 'Well, that's great.' She said, 'No, it's not,' and that they paid people to monitor that activity."
Kimberly Freely, a Sears spokeswoman at the company's headquarters in Hoffman Estates, Ill., described the episode as a case of mistaken identity.
"Our store management was attempting to address an ongoing issue of excessive socialization between mall security officers and store associates, which had been hampering associates' productivity," Freely said in a statement. "In no way was this an attempt to prevent on- or off-duty officers from shopping at our store."
Glade said he joined his wife at the store to buy a dishwasher when he was kicked out Monday. Glade said he asked for permission to take his morning break and went to Sears to help his wife shop.
"I don't think I was in the store for three minutes when I was asked to leave," he said.
"The guy was grinning the whole time he was asking me to leave. He said I was a deterrent to the store. Then he threw me out."
The Glades decided to buy the dishwasher elsewhere.

Everything we have bought from Sears has been a disappointment. The last thing was a lawn tractor. Never again! I told my spouse that if ever I buy anything from Sears again to just go ahead and knock me in the head for being so stupid.
Same here. K-Mart really screwed them. I used to have a Sears hardware store about 2 minutes from my house. Used to go there all the time. Then K-Mart bought Sears and the hardware store took out half their hardware so they could sell - appliances. Yea like people pop into hardware stores to buy dishwashers every weekend. About a year or so later, the place went out of business.
Haven't been to Sears since.
The high dollar half life handles flaked Faberware cheap paint and inhibited heat distribution.
Once proud, but now hiding my Sear's cookware at fish camp.
Now it's time to get the real stuff.
I bought a sears washing machine in Jan. 01. Before it was a year old it had broken down 3 times and they would come out to repair it. I tried to file a lemon law claim for a new machine but they told me that it has to break down 4 times in 12 consecutive months before that LL could be activated.
I got mad. Well, I bought a masters protection plan (insurance) from them and pay $110.42 for 2 years coverage. Since I bought the machine I've spent $333.26 on insurance. They have repaired it about 12 times. Each time they come out to fix it it cost them $145.00+ part. That's conservatively about $200.00 in total to fix my machine.
Now, when you multiple that $200.00 times 12, repairing my machine has cost them about $2,400.00.
Every time it breaks down hubby says, 'let's just go get you a new machine'. I tell him no, it's the principle of it, they should have replaced my lemon years ago but they wouldn't.
I just looked at my protection plan and it expires in Nov. of this year. Almost time to renew it again.
With a REAL cop in the store, crime might be deterred, thereby not giving the wannabe the opportunity or need to flex his manliness and “authority”, thereby negating the need for his job, but also negating his usefulness in life.”
As a bookkeeper who hates crome of any kind, I have always advocated this:
If you or your group are owners of a shopping mall or a larger size strip mall, make plans in your building for a FREE space for a “sub-station” for the local police or sheriff. It will make their presence a benefit for your customers, and you will be a community hero for making things easier for the cops. A total no-brainer to me.

Heh. Here's a great example of a manager getting so lost in the details that she's totally lost the big picture.

When I had a speed shop in the 50s we used Craftsman 12 point sockets on impact wrenches for speed and SnapOn for everything else.
Once a month we took back the worn sockets for replacements with never a question.
We bought a new house, so we put all new appliances in it....all Kenmore.
In short, it was a terrible decision, and I’ll not repeat it.
And mugging old ladies, summarily executing people, stealing cars, stealing food & water from residents, looting, and all sorts of mayhem including the illegal and unConstitutional arbitrary seizure of firearms from law abiding citizens. - And not all of those miscreants with a badge were New Orleans police - oh, no. Many of the miscreants were from other states.
Give me a break-you think we should view police officers as potential lawbreakers and kick them our of a Sears Store-sheer lunacy.

A consumer strikes back!
Similar story: In 1981, having returned from 3 years in W. Germany as an Army officer, wife and I needed to buy a mattress so we went to Sears with a 3 years inactive Sears card. Went to ensure it was OK to use and to up the credit limit for the purchase — was denied due to inactivity and recent job change from military to civilian.
Haven’t darkened the door of a Sears store since — wouldn’t bother me a bit if they all fell to dust.
