Evan O’Dorney always eats fish before his spelling bees. The brain food apparently has served him well: He’s the 2007 Scripps National Spelling Bee champion.

Yeah, but what about socialization.

Yeah, I could tell you all about socialization in inner city schools.

Yea, but he claims math and music are his real loves. The kid is amazing.

Sure, I was agreeing with you about the idiocy of the socialization argument. If you put an otherwise good kid with a group of corrupt, little gangsta wannabes for 6 hours a day, 5 days a week, 9 months a year, chances are that it's not the group whose behavior is going to be modified.

We watched it last night, and the commentators mentioned that he was homeschooled by his mom...haven’t read newspaper accounts.

Our homeschool association has a 6-man football team! Last year, we were one of three in the State of Texas.

My wife and I watched the blurb on Fox News this morning. I told her I bet the kid is a homeschooler. But you’re right, they never said a word about that. Instead they spent 5 minutes making jokes about the word he spelled.

I believe that a homeschooled kid can still play sports in the public school district in which he/she resides.

Thank you! It’s a shame I have to be kind of defensive about it, but I’ve learned.

I wouldn’t even post on the other thread on this topic, after reading some of the responses.

This kid’s attitude kind of perturbed me. If he hated the idea of doing something as *dumb* and distasteful as memorizing spelling words, why’d he get involved? Just so he could put down all the other kids who “didn’t” win?

Maybe he’ll just let them keep their $35,000, too. I beg to differ with him on the “memorization” part, anyway. All it really is for most good spellers is exposure, more than any kind of forced memorization.

I didn’t memorize anything - although the school had kids and teachers drill me several hours a day. I just figured out the ones I didn’t know and the others were words I had seen or been exposed to - and I had a photographic memory back then.

Lost it just about the time of the age cut-off for the Bee - lol, when boys discover girls and vice versa!

The local TV news I watched this AM used the home-schooling angle as the headline, so it was important here. (HouTX)

The local contestant from St. Louis that didn’t make it past round 6 went to a private school that costs probably $30,000/yr. Ooops...money can’t buy everything!

They did mention it, along with the fact taht he was the third home-schooled child to win the competition. They mentioned it near the end of the program.

Same reaction here. It made me feel more sympathy for the little guy who lost to him, when the camera panned him as the winner was being celebrated. It was as if the event meant more to him than it did to the kid who won.

Sorry to ruin your good "mad on", but I checked into this deal and it seems you are just over wrought with the claim of not mentioning the home-schooling. A little fact checking made your point a little absurd.

First of all it isn't MSNBC that you were scolding, but an AP report on an MSNBC web page. So, you can't blame MSNBC here. It is an AP story.

You didn't ruin my "mad on"; :) I have never heard that phrase before....MSNBC posted the story; whatever source they had, they are still responsible for the content on their site.

Second, the AP has several other versions of the story where they plainly mention the kid was home-schooled.

I didn't see them in my google search. Can you show me some of those "several" versions?

So, your feeling that home schooling is being ignored or slighted in this case doesn't seem warranted.

I think it is absolutely warranted. I have news on all morning...over three hours, I heard the story three times and the only time it was mentioned was during the 5:00 am hour.

We obviously have different observations.
