HARTFORD, June 1 Illegal immigrants who graduate from Connecticut high schools will be eligible for the resident tuition rate at the states public universities and colleges if the governor signs a bill that the Senate narrowly passed on Friday.
Connecticut would join 10 other states, including New York, that allow illegal immigrants to pay the in-state rate that is available to other residents. Illegal immigrants now often pay twice as much to attend Connecticuts taxpayer-supported colleges and universities.
Aides to Gov. M. Jodi Rell, a Republican, said she would not decide whether to sign the bill until she sees its final language, which she had not done Friday.
The Senate approved the bill, 20 to 15, after a three-hour debate in which several Republicans vigorously argued against the measure, saying that it would reward illegal activity. The debate in the House was similarly heated before the bill passed, 76 to 67, on May 17, with several Democrats joining most Republicans to vote against the measure.
What were doing here today is trying to incorporate some kids who, through no fault of their own, have arrived in our communities, said Jonathan Harris, a Democrat from West Hartford who was the bills lead sponsor in the Senate. They reside in our state. Theyve gone to four years of high school. Theyve demonstrated the acumen and the academic success.
In 2001, Texas was the first state to grant in-state tuition to illegal immigrants. New York passed a similar bill in 2002. Some state legislatures including the one in Texas have debated laws prohibiting in-state tuition rates for illegal immigrants. Last year, Arizona voters overwhelmingly approved such a ban.

Well, for some lawbreakers. You know, sort of like "hate crimes".
nancy pelosi and her syrian buds wouldn’t allow it!

Indeed, 'tis food for thought.
I think you are %100 right . Why don’t someone in Conn . challenge this on that basis ?
They tried that at the University of WA, until the legal aliens that were here on a student visa and also graduated from local high schools sued for the same rights. Washington has quite a few Asians who come here to attend private high schools and learn English before applying to US universities.
The school lost and had to refund the difference between the out of state and in state tuition to Asian students, who were here on green card.
Most of the Asian students had to go home after graduation, though. Do they get to come back now?
This book suggests some reasons:
The message: cross the border illegally, and you get discounts.
I did read the billions go through the Clinton-Mendalla Foundation.
Guess once pres - billions now follow
More like the Sheriff of Nottingham and his hoodlums, stealing from the poor to give to the rich (i.e., themselves).
QUISLING: a synonym for traitor, someone who collaborates with the invaders of his country.
Amen !!
Let’s see—the interview goes like this?
So you are in America illegally?
Si Senor
And you want the reduced in-state tuition?
Aiii Carmaba Si Senor Si Si
The interviewer says “fill out this form” (printed in Spanish of course) and leaves the room to “grab some files” in order to secretly call ICE agents to come pick the illegal up for processing out of the country.
Is that what this is?
In a sane society yes—and is done all the time to snag all the other criminals; they are sting operations. But this illegal will get a cut rate tuition not offered to my children.
And this is still America?
This is HELL.
preferential treatment for a race of illegal squatters.
Integration with Mexico and points south. They’re ramming this stuff through and the US public continues to snooze. Well, except for important stuff, like what celeb has been arrested, etc..
In a previous thread an illegal alien had been given subsidized public schooling and was awarded a Goizueta scholarship...and wanted MORE!
“that seem to think the American people must pay for the world”
We are a rich nation, and a basically uneducated nation when it comes to economics.
I believe that the polls that show that a high percentage of people can’t name any of their representatives would also show that these same people believe that the government can just “print more money”.
Couple that with a liberal belief in a “world utopia” and you have the answer to your question.
