The 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit is headed home after a busy five months.

After leaving in January, the unit entered the U.S. Central Command area of operations at the end of that month to support regional security efforts and to quickly respond to any incident across the Middle East.

Here is what the unit's been working on during its deployment:

Members of the unit spent time in Djibouti conducting Image Nautilus, an exercise involving bilateral military training.

Combat Logistics Battalion provided all the logistics while Marines from Battalion Landing Team 2/2 worked with Djiboutian soldiers on weapons handling drills. BLT 2/2 spent two days painting, repairing and cleaning at Ecole du Stade Primary School in the Balballa area of Djibouti City.

Marines and sailors participated in Exercise Edged Mallet in March, working with the Kenyan army and on community relations projects in the surrounding areas of Naval Station Manda Bay, Kenya.

Marines from the CLB helped refurbish the Bargoni Primary School in Bargoni, Kenya. Medical specialists from the MEU and the Bataan Strike Group held a two-day medical clinic for residents of the Bargoni area.

The unit and forces in Qatar conducted bilateral military training in April.

The exercise Eastern Maverick enhanced interoperability and tactical proficiency between U.S. and Qatari forces. Approximately 900 Marines and sailors from the unit participated in the exercise.

The unit offloaded nearly all personnel and equipment from the ships of the Bataan Strike Group into Kuwait April 23 to begin two weeks of sustainment training at the Udairi Range complex.

The USS Bataan and Shreveport set a course around the Arabian Peninsula and into a Middle East port to stage the MEU for its final engagement exercise in CENTCOM's area of responsibility.

On May 25, an AH-1W Super Cobra helicopter was involved in a mishap in Jordan during a bilateral training exercise with the Jordanian armed forces. The two pilots were treated for injuries at the scene and transported to Amman for evaluation.

The bilateral training ended with a combined operation with motorized, mechanized and helicopter-borne forces from BLT 2/2 and the host nation's military conducting a coordinated assault with air support from Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron- 264 (Reinforced).

Although the unit didn't stop in Iraq or Afghanistan, the importance of the work the Marines and sailors did cannot be overstated, said Col. Gregg A. Sturdevant, 26th MEU commander.

"Our continued engagement and regional stability are key to ensuring nations in the Middle East don't fall prey to transnational terrorism," Sturdevant said.

What in this would constitute “giving our enemy information”?

I understand the concern, but MEU always give an “after action” report on their way home. I’m surprised there was not more detail in light of what happened in Afghanistan.

If the Marines put the information out I’ll trust them to tell nothing they don’t think is appropriate.

They are about to pull back into port, how are they announcing troop movements?

I will assume you are reading something other than what has been posted. My son was on the 26th two years ago and will be on the upcoming 22nd. This information is not secret.

Pulling into port as in out of theater?

I have less of a problem at that point.

Movements in and out of theater let the bad guys narrow down a time to start lobbing mortars at air strips.

It doesn’t have to be classified to be useful.

Home port near Jacksonville, NC.......they are home!

Please, read up on the MEU’s and their roles and goals. What you are reading is an after action report.

MEU’s are sent out every six months. The exact date is not given. Exactly where they are going, like when they will pass through the Suez is not disclosed and what their missions will be are not previewed.
After they are done they give a review.

I would feel the same as you if they were giving out on going mission details. Those going out on MEU’s are very tight lipped on details prior to leaving. My wife and I will see our son off and we don’t even know when that will be, but when we are alerted we’ll head down there.

New Scam Targeting Military Families Uncovered

A new identify theft scam that targets military families and involves callers using false American Red Cross identifications has been uncovered.

The American Red Cross has learned about a scam in which a female caller contacts a military spouse and identifies herself as a representative from the Red Cross, according to a release from the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago.

The caller states the spouse’s husband, who is not identified, was wounded while on duty in Iraq and was taken to a hospital in Germany. The caller then says medical treatment has been delayed until paperwork has been completed, the release said.

In order to start the treatment, the caller asks for a verification of the husband’s social security number and date of birth, the release said. In a recent case, the spouse was quick to catch on and did not provide any information to the caller.

“American Red Cross representatives do not typically contact military members/dependents directly and almost always go through a commander or first sergeant channels,” said Martha Dittmar, communications manager for the American Red Cross of Greater Chicago. “Military family members are urged not to give out any personal information over the phone if contacted by unknown/unverified individuals, including confirming that your spouse is deployed.”

According to the release, American Red Cross representatives will contact military members or dependents directly only if an emergency message is initiated by a family member. The Red Cross also does not report any type of casualty information.

The Department of Defense contacts families if a military family member has been injured, the release said. Should a military family member receive a suspicious call, they are urged to contact their local police department.

I’m sorry, but your feelings about such things are one thing. The fact that stating troop movements/ typical patterns can result in dangersou cnsequences. Being able to google it only means the others did something wrong as well.

Im glad for the precautions they take on such things, but the enemy can use any small detail to make an attack more effective.

It’s cool what they do and all, but that doesn’s change the fact that they use that along with any other non-classified info to spread such things.

I get pissed when MSM posts arials of bases over here. This is little different.
